The city serves as the capital of the Emirate of Sharjah. It is a key part of the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area. The emirate operates within a federal framework. This means it shares political, military, and economic functions with other emirates. However, the emirate maintains jurisdiction over local matters. These include civil law enforcement and the upkeep of local facilities.

Understanding the name of the city involves several different theories. The exact origin of the word "Sharjah" remains unknown. One common interpretation links the name to the word "sharq." This word means "east" in Arabic. This theory suggests the name refers to its location. At the time, Sharjah was the easternmost settlement. It sat to the east of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Another theory suggests a link to the word "shurūq." Some older theories even connect the name to a pre-Islamic idol called Abed Al Shareq. Other scholars suggest the name might come from Andalusi Arabic. In that dialect, the word was used to refer to a fort.

History shows that humans have settled in this region for over 5,000 years. The Al Qasimi dynasty has ruled Sharjah since the 18th century. In 1727, the Huwayla tribe of the Qawasim clan established itself there. They declared Sharjah to be independent. On January 8, 1820, Sheikh Sultan I signed the General Maritime Treaty with Britain. This agreement established a protectorate to keep the Ottoman Turks out of the area. Because of its position on the route to India, Sharjah was a vital location. It was recognized as a salute state.

In 1971, Sharjah joined several other emirates in the Act of Union. This event officially formed the United Arab Emirates on December 2.

Today, Sharjah is a massive economic and cultural engine. The city covers approximately 235 square kilometers. Its population exceeded 1,800,000 people during the 2022–2023 period. The city alone contributes 7.4% of the total GDP of the United Arab Emirates. It is widely regarded as the cultural capital of the UAE. UNESCO has recognized its importance through several titles. It was the Islamic culture capital in 2014. It also served as the Sharjah World Book Capital in 2019.

The city is also a center for university students. The 2025 QS Best Student Cities list ranked it 76th in the world.

Architecture and commerce define many parts of the city. The Gold Souq, or Central Souq, is a premier shopping destination.

British architects Michael Lyle & Partners designed this building. It was completed in 1978 under the guidance of Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. The design is intended to look like a grand, traditional bazaar. It features shops for gold, clothing, and antiques along the Khalid Lagoon. Another important site is Al Hisn, also known as Sharjah Fort. Built in 1823, it was once the residence of the Al Qasimi family. The walls are 70 to 80 centimeters thick. They are made of coral from the Gulf seabed and limestone mortar.

Local landmarks often tell stories of the community. The Rolla area is named after a historic banyan tree. A sculpture now sits in Rolla Square to honor that tree. Near the Blue Souq, there is a famous roundabout. It features a floral sign that says, "Smile, You're in Sharjah." This serves as a welcome to visitors despite the heavy traffic. In the Downtown area, Bank Street features a unique urban park. Local residents chose objects from their home countries to place there. These items include benches and trees that hold personal meaning for them.

Sharjah continues to lead in modern social changes. On January 1, 2022, the city made a historic change to its schedule. The public sector adopted a four-day working week. This change also included a three-day weekend. This made Sharjah the first government sector in the entire Middle East to do this. The city remains a place where tradition and new ideas meet. It balances its ancient roots with a fast-moving, modern economy.
