He was a central figure in shaping the Maratha Kingdom during the early 18th century. Born to Sambhaji I and Yesubai, he was the grandson of the empire's founder, Shivaji I. His life was defined by long periods of captivity and a struggle to reclaim his ancestral throne. Through his leadership, Maratha influence expanded across much of central and western India. His reign transformed the empire into a powerful and organized state.

Shahu's life changed drastically when he was only seven years old.

In 1689, following the Battle of Raigarh, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb took Shahu and his mother prisoner. Aurangzeb held Shahu in captivity for many years. The emperor intended to use the young prince as a political pawn in his wars against the Marathas. Despite being a prisoner, Shahu was treated well by the Mughals. Aurangzeb even gifted him the Bhavani sword of Shivaji and various gold-hilted swords. He also granted Shahu rights to land revenue in areas like Akkalkot and Baramati for his maintenance.

After Aurangzeb died in 1707, Shahu's path to freedom began. Prince Azam Shah, one of Aurangzeb's sons, released Shahu to create conflict among Maratha factions.

Shahu left the Mughal camp at Doraha on May 8, 1707. On his journey toward Pune, he received hospitality from the rulers of Jaipur and Jodhpur. He visited the sacred city of Ujjain to pay respects at the Mahakaleshwar temple. During this journey, he gained vital support. Rawal Mohansinh of Bijagad was the first to provide Shahu with troops and funds. Soon, many other Maratha chiefs and Brahmin families joined his cause.

Reclaiming the throne required winning a civil war against his aunt, Tarabai. Tarabai governed the Maratha realm for her son and claimed Shahu was an impostor.

The conflict reached a turning point at the Battle of Khed on October 12, 1707. Shahu personally commanded his troops during this engagement. His victory at Khed was resounding, forcing Tarabai's leaders to flee. Following this win, Shahu quickly captured several major forts, including Raigad and Torna. He eventually took control of Satara, which became the capital of his realms.

Shahu was noted for his calm and steady character, even during dangerous moments. In one instance, assassins sent by Udaji Chavan entered Shahu's tent.

Instead of reacting with anger, Shahu remained indifferent to the threat. He even gave the assassins gold bracelets and certificates of service. He chose to address the conflict through military action rather than personal vengeance. This approach helped him eventually defeat the forces of the Kolhapur faction. He even treated captured family members of his rivals with chivalry by sending them to safe locations.

To manage his growing territory, Shahu relied on skilled ministers and generals. He appointed Balaji Vishwanath as his Peshwa, or Prime Minister, in 1713.

This role was crucial for negotiating with powerful figures like the naval leader Kanhoji Angre. Angre, a famous admiral, agreed to serve as the Sarkhel, or grand admiral, of Shahu's navy. Together, they secured control over the Konkan coast and defeated the Siddis of Janjira. This period saw the consolidation of Maratha power through both diplomacy and military strength. The empire became a complex system of powerful families working under the Chhatrapati.

Shahu I ruled until his death on December 15, 1749. His reign left a lasting legacy on the political landscape of India. Even after his death, the empire continued under a loose coalition of his successors. These included the Peshwa Bhats, the Shinde and Holkar houses, and the Gaikwad of Baroda. These leaders administered their specific sections of the empire under the authority of the Chhatrapati. Shahu's ability to navigate captivity, civil war, and expansion helped ensure the Maratha Empire remained a dominant force for years to come.
