However, life in the court could be very difficult. His stepmother, Nur Jahan, held much power during his father's reign. She favored her own son-in-law for the throne. This led to many tensions for the young prince. In 1622, Khurram even rebelled against his father. He did not succeed and lost his father's favor for a time.

After Jahangir died in 1627, a struggle for power began. Khurram fought his half-brother, Shahryar Mirza, for the throne.

Prince Khurram grew up with a very broad and intense education. His father, Jahangir, helped teach him many cultural arts. These included poetry and music. He also received martial training to prepare him for leadership and war. Interestingly, the prince showed a strong interest in Hindi literature from a young age. While he was trained in many areas, court chroniclers noted he had little interest in studying the Turki language. His early years were spent learning how to navigate the complex life of a royal prince.

Life in the Mughal court was often filled with political tension and competition. Khurram's stepmother, Nur Jahan, held immense power during his father's reign. She was a very active participant in administration and decisions. Nur Jahan favored her son-in-law, Shahryar Mirza, to be the next emperor. This created a conflict with Khurram, who was considered the heir-apparent. In 1608, Jahangir officially supported Khurram by granting him the sarkar of Hissar-e-Feroza. This was a specific administrative district usually given to the heir. However, the rivalry with Nur Jahan led Khurram to rebel against his father in 1622. This rebellion failed, and he lost his father's favor for a period of time.

After the death of Emperor Jahangir in October 1627, a struggle for power began. Khurram fought against his half-brother, Shahryar Mirza, to claim the throne. Khurram was successful and crowned himself emperor at the Agra Fort. To secure his position, he executed most of his rival claimants. His reign involved many different types of leadership challenges. He managed aggressive military campaigns against the Deccan sultanates and the Safavids. He also dealt with conflicts involving the Portuguese. Additionally, he had to manage local rebellions and the devastating Deccan famine that occurred between 1630 and 1632.

Shah Jahan is most famous for his massive building projects. He commissioned the Red Fort and the Shah Jahan Mosque. Most notably, he built the Taj Mahal to honor his favorite consort, Mumtaz Mahal. They married in 1612 after a long engagement of five years. Mumtaz Mahal was not just his wife; she was a crucial political advisor. She was responsible for the imperial seal, which allowed her to review official documents. She even had the right to issue her own orders, known as hukums. When she died in 1631 after giving birth to a daughter, Shah Jahan was deeply affected. The Taj Mahal was built as her tomb.

The end of his reign was marked by a violent family conflict. In 1657, the ailing Shah Jahan appointed his eldest son, Dara Shikoh, as his successor. This decision triggered the Mughal war of succession from 1658 to 1659. His three sons fought for control of the empire. His son Aurangzeb emerged victorious and became the sixth emperor. Aurangzeb executed his surviving brothers, including the Crown Prince Dara Shikoh. After recovering from an illness in July 1658, Shah Jahan was imprisoned by Aurangzeb. He lived inside the Agra Fort until his death in January 1666. He was eventually laid to rest next to Mumtaz Mahal in the Taj Mahal.
