Shading language

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Computers use special code to make pictures. This code is called a shading language. Most code tells the main computer brain what to do. Shading languages are different. They send instructions to the GPU. The GPU is a part of the computer that handles graphics.

Some code is for "offline rendering." This means making the best images possible. It takes a long time to finish. One famous way is called RenderMan. It uses different types of shaders. Light shaders find the color of light. Surface shaders show how light hits an object. Volume shaders can make things look like fog.

Other code is for "real-time rendering." This is used for video games. The code must work very fast. It shows pictures right away. There are many kinds of this code. GLSL is used with OpenGL. HLSL is used for Xbox and DirectX. Apple made a language called MSL for Macs and iPhones.

Sometimes, people need to move code between languages. They can use tools to translate it. They can also use a middle language to help.
