Shadia was a legendary Egyptian actress and singer.
She became a defining icon of the golden age of Egyptian cinema. Her influence stretched across the entire Middle East and the Arab world. Critics often describe her as the most successful comprehensive artist in Arabic history. She earned many affectionate nicknames during her career. One was "The Golden Guitar," and another was "The Guitar of the Egyptian Singing." Most famously, she was called the "Idol of the Masses" after a successful film.
Shadia was born Fatma Ahmad Kamal Shaker on February 8, 1931, in Cairo, Egypt. Her father was Egyptian, and her mother was of Turkish origin. She grew up with five siblings. As a young child, she discovered a deep love for singing. Her teachers in primary school encouraged her to pursue music. She eventually chose the stage name "Shadia," which was the name of a newborn friend of her family. She began her professional acting career at the age of fifteen.
Her career was built on a massive body of work. Shadia performed in more than 100 films throughout her life. She was known for her versatility in different genres. She acted in light comedies, romantic stories, and heavy melodramas. One of her breakthrough roles was in the 1959 film "Al Maraa Al Maghoula" (The Unknown Woman). She also starred in the film "El Les we El Kelab" (The Thief and the Dogs) in 1962. In that film, she took on the serious role of a prostitute. Six of her movies are ranked among the top 100 Egyptian films of the 20th century.
