Scientists also use the handicap principle to explain why animals develop such costly traits. This theory suggests that an extravagant trait acts as an honest signal of fitness. 
The history of this theory shows how much our understanding has changed. Charles Darwin first proposed sexual selection in his 1859 book, *On the Origin of Species*. He realized that natural selection alone could not explain features like the peacock's tail. 
In the early 20th century, the theory gained a much stronger foundation. Ronald Fisher, an English statistician, provided a mathematical basis for these ideas in 1930. He introduced concepts like the "sexy son" hypothesis and Fisher's principle. Fisher's principle helps explain why the sex ratio in most populations remains close to 1:1. 
Sexual selection is found throughout the entire natural world. It is not limited to large, visible animals. It occurs in plants, fungi, and even tiny insects.
