Animals change over a long time.
Living things are all a little bit different.
Some of these differences help an animal stay safe. A helpful trait can help an animal live a long time. It also helps them have babies.
The babies often have those same helpful traits.
Over a long time, these traits become more common. This is how groups of animals change. It is a way that nature works.
Nature chooses the traits that work best for life.
All living things have small differences.
Some traits help an animal survive better. These traits might help them find food. They might also help them find a mate. When these animals have babies, they pass these traits down. This is called inheritance.
Charles Darwin made this idea famous. He showed how nature picks the best traits. This is called natural selection. It is different from artificial selection. Humans use artificial selection to breed pets or crops. Nature does not have a plan. It just lets the helpful traits win.
Sometimes, traits are picked because they look good to mates. This is called sexual selection. Other traits are picked to help with having healthy babies. This is called fecundity selection. Over a long time, these changes can make new species. Small changes happen in a small area. Big changes happen in the whole world. This is how life changes on Earth.
Natural selection is a key way that life changes over time. It explains how living things adapt to their homes. This process happens because individuals have different traits. Some of these traits help them survive better than others.
This way of working happens in a few steps. First, there must be variation among living things. This means not every individual is exactly the same. Next, there is a struggle for existence. This happens because resources like food are limited. Some individuals have traits that help them win this struggle. These traits might help them find food or avoid danger.
Many people thought about these ideas before Charles Darwin. The Greek philosopher Aristotle wondered if useful forms survived. In the 9th century, a writer named Al-Jahiz wrote about the struggle for existence. Even Leonardo da Vinci thought animal shapes changed to fit their homes.
There are many specific ways traits get picked. One way is called sexual selection. This is when traits are chosen by mating partners. Another way is fecundity selection. This happens when traits help with having healthy babies.
Natural selection is like a filter for life. You can compare it to artificial selection used by humans. Farmers use artificial selection to breed specific crops or pets. They choose which plants or animals to breed on purpose. Natural selection is different because it is not intentional. Nature does not have a plan or a goal.
Natural selection is a fundamental mechanism of evolution. It describes the process where certain individuals survive and reproduce more successfully than others. This success is due to the specific characteristics they possess. These observable traits are often heritable, meaning they can be passed from parents to offspring. Over many generations, natural selection changes the traits that define a whole population or species.
The process of natural selection relies on several interconnected steps. First, variation must exist within a population. This means individuals have different physical or genetic traits. Second, there is a struggle for existence. This occurs because populations often grow faster than the food and resources available to them. Consequently, individuals with traits that provide an advantage are more likely to survive. These survivors then reproduce and pass those advantageous traits to the next generation through inheritance. Over time, these helpful traits become more common in the environment.
There are different scales and types of selection that drive these changes. When new traits become favored due to changes in a specific niche, microevolution occurs. If changes happen in the broader environment, macroevolution occurs. These large-scale changes can eventually lead to the rise of entirely new species. Selection can also happen through specific pathways. Sexual selection occurs when certain traits are actively preferred by mating partners.
While Charles Darwin is the most famous name associated with this theory, many thinkers explored these ideas earlier. In the classical era, philosophers like Empedocles suggested nature produces variety randomly. Aristotle considered if only useful forms survived, though he focused more on how embryos develop. In the 9th century, the writer Al-Jahiz described the struggle for existence in population regulation. Even Leonardo da Vinci reasoned that animal shapes changed to fit their environments.
Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace are credited with the modern discovery. They presented their ideas jointly in 1858. Darwin later published his landmark book, *On the Origin of Species*, in 1859. He used the concept of artificial selection to explain his ideas. Artificial selection is when humans intentionally breed plants or animals for desirable traits.
Darwin’s work was heavily influenced by the economist Thomas Robert Malthus. Malthus observed that populations increase exponentially while food supplies grow much more slowly. This creates an inevitable struggle for resources. Darwin applied this logic to the natural world to explain how favorable variations are preserved. He spent years gathering meticulous evidence to support his conclusions before publishing. This evidence helped move biology toward a scientific understanding of how species change.
In the 20th century, the theory underwent the modern synthesis. This combined Darwinian evolution with the new science of genetics. Scientists realized that while traits change through natural selection, they also change through random genetic drift. Today, 21st-century biologists use molecular genetics to study these processes even more deeply. They look at evolutionary developmental biology to see how the growth processes of different organisms have evolved over time.
