Sexual dimorphism

In many living things, males and females do not look the same. Scientists call this sexual dimorphism. It means the two sexes have different physical traits. These differences can be about size, weight, or color. They can even involve how an animal acts. Most animals and some plants show these differences. This happens because different traits help each sex do its job.

Many animals use color to attract a mate. This is called sexual dichromatism, which is when colors differ between sexes. For example, male peacocks have very bright feathers. These feathers help them attract peahens.

Male mallard ducks have bright green heads. The females look much more plain. In some birds, like the blue tit, males look very yellow. This color comes from eating certain larvae. The color might even show if the male is healthy.

Some traits are used for fighting or protection. These are often called aggressive utility traits. Some males have teeth or blunt heads to use as weapons.

Many beetles have large horns on their heads. Male Japanese rhinoceros beetles use these impressive structures. In some species, the females are actually the larger ones. This is called reversed sexual dimorphism. You can see this in some spiders and leopard seals.

Plants can also show these differences. Most flowering plants have both male and female parts. However, about 6% of species have separate males and females. This is called dioecy. Some orchids look very different depending on their sex. This helps bees visit them in the best way.

Other plants change color once they are fertilized. This tells pollinators to move to a different flower. This saves time for the insect and the plant.

Insects also show many different types of dimorphism. Some female insects stay in a shape that looks like a larva. Others might not have wings at all. In the red mason bee, the female is larger than the male. The female is about 10 to 12 mm. The male is smaller, at about 8 to 10 mm. This size difference happens because females eat more pollen.
