Once the filaments are freed, workers brush the cocoon to find the end of the thread. The filaments are then wound onto a reel to create raw silk. To create stronger threads, multiple filaments are combined through a process called "throwing." This process involves drawing the silk under tension through various guides. The amount and direction of the twist determine the type of yarn produced.
Archaeological evidence reveals that sericulture has a very deep history. While Confucian texts suggest silk production began around 2700 BCE, older evidence exists. The Yangshao period, dating from 5000 to 3000 BCE, shows early signs of cultivation. In 1977, researchers in Nancun, Hebei, found a ceramic piece from 5400 to 5500 years ago. This piece was designed to look like a silkworm, providing early proof of the practice. Analysis of fibers from the Indus Civilization also shows silk use between 2450 and 2000 BCE. This suggests silk was used across a wide region of South Asia.
Silk production spread globally through trade and conflict. It moved along the Silk Road to reach ancient Khotan. By 140 CE, the practice was firmly established in India. In the 6th century CE, silkworm eggs were smuggled into the Byzantine Empire. This allowed the Mediterranean to develop its own silk industry. He established silkworks in Palermo and Calabria, which helped spread the industry into Western Europe.
