Sergei Valeryevich Mozyakin is a legendary figure in professional ice hockey. He played the position of a winger, which means he operated primarily along the sides of the ice. Mozyakin is widely recognized as one of the most productive scorers in the history of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Throughout his KHL career, he accumulated over 735 points during the regular season. He also added 162 points during the playoffs. His ability to score made him a dominant force in European hockey for many years.

To understand his impact, one must look at how he generated points. Scoring in hockey involves two main actions: shooting the puck into the net to score a goal, and passing the puck to a teammate who then scores. Mozyakin excelled at both. He was frequently honored as the "Best Sniper," a title given to players with exceptional shooting accuracy. He also earned the Golden Stick Award, which recognizes the Most Valuable Player (MVP), four times. His skill allowed him to lead the league in scoring on six separate occasions.

Mozyakin's career can be divided into several distinct phases and team affiliations. He began his journey in the Russian leagues, playing for teams like CSKA Moscow and Khimik Moscow Oblast. He later played for Atlant Moscow Oblast before finding his greatest success with Metallurg Magnitogorsk. In Magnitogorsk, he became a central figure and a long-term leader. He even signed a significant six-year contract extension with the team in February 2013. This stability helped him maintain his elite level of play for many seasons.

His professional history is marked by significant milestones and draft decisions. In 2002, the Columbus Blue Jackets selected him in the ninth round of the NHL entry draft. He was the 263rd player chosen overall. Despite this connection to North American hockey, he chose to remain in the KHL. He spent much of his career competing in the Russian Superleague (RSL) before it was absorbed into the KHL. This path allowed him to become the all-time highest scorer in the KHL's history.

Mozyakin's statistical dominance is supported by impressive numbers. During the 2016–17 season with Metallurg Magnitogorsk, he recorded a massive 85 points in just 60 games. He also led the league in goals with 37 during the 2007–08 RSL season. His leadership was most evident when he served as team captain for Metallurg Magnitogorsk. In the 2013–14 season, he led the team to win the Gagarin Cup, the KHL's championship trophy. He achieved this while serving as both the captain and the leading scorer.

Beyond his club success, Mozyakin was a vital member of the Russian national team. He represented his country in numerous international competitions. He was part of the Russian teams that won gold medals at the World Championships in 2008 and 2009. He also competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics. During those games, he played for the Olympic Athletes from Russia team. His international career included participation in twelve EHT games during the 2007–08 season alone.

Mozyakin's career connects the traditions of the Russian Superleague to the modern era of the KHL. His journey reflects the evolving landscape of professional hockey in Eurasia. He bridged the gap between different eras of Russian competition. By choosing to stay in the KHL, he helped build the league's history and prestige. When he announced his retirement on July 5, 2021, he left behind a record that remains a benchmark for excellence. His legacy is defined by his consistent ability to perform at the highest level of the sport.
