It was originally founded as Sungai Ujong. Ancient records like the Malay Annals mention King Parameswara visiting this area. Javanese accounts also refer to the settlement as Sang Hyang Ujong. Growth accelerated in the 1870s due to tin ore discoveries. Tin was found in a nearby area called Rasah. This led to an influx of Arab, Malay, and Chinese immigrants. These people arrived to work in the mines and engage in trade. The Linggi River was the main route for transporting tin and supplies.

Political changes shaped the modern administration of the city.

In the late 19th century, local chieftains had a rivalry. The Dato' Kelana and the Dato' Shahbandar disagreed over mining control. This conflict allowed for British intervention in Negeri Sembilan. The British supported the Dato' Kelana and defeated the Dato' Shahbandar. As a result, the Dato' Kelana accepted a British Resident. This official was meant to advise on matters excluding religion and Malay customs. Captain Murray served as the first resident. He established his residence at Channer Road, now called Jalan Dato' Siamang Gagap.

Seremban recently underwent a major administrative change.

For a long time, it was one of four state capitals without city status. To achieve this, the state government decided to merge two councils. They combined the Nilai Municipal Council and the Seremban Municipal Council. This merger created the Seremban City Council. The process involved ensuring that infrastructure and public services were ready. Officials wanted to guarantee good garbage collection and safe neighbourhoods. The two municipal administrators officially merged on 1 January 2020. Seremban's official city status was declared on 20 January 2020.

The culture of Seremban is deeply tied to the Minangkabau people.

This influence is visible in the local architecture. Many buildings feature roofs that resemble buffalo horns. You can see this style at the State Museum and the City Council Hall. The region also follows a matrilineal custom called Adat Perpatih. This means family lines follow the mother. This makes Negeri Sembilan the only matrilineal state in Malaysia. The city is also a culinary melting pot. It features a mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisines. Popular dishes include masak lemak cili api and beef noodles.
