Sequence (geology)

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Rocks grow in many layers. These layers stay in a group. This group is called a sequence.

Each group sits between two gaps. These gaps are at the top and bottom. They show where the layers stop.

All the layers in a group are related. They were made in a similar way. This makes them a single unit.

Some groups are special. There are type 1 and type 2 groups. There are also smaller parts called parasequences.

Scientists use these groups to study the earth. It helps them see the past.
