Most experts think there are between 50 and 200 people. The Sentinelese hunt for food. They use spears, bows, and arrows. They also catch seafood like crabs. They build small huts with leaf roofs. They use canoes to fish in the sea.

Many people have tried to visit the island. In 1880, a man named Maurice Vidal Portman went there. His group took six people from the island. Sadly, the people became sick and died. Because of this, it is important to stay away.

The Indian government made the island a protected area. They have patrols in the water. This helps keep the Sentinelese safe from visitors. It also keeps outsiders from landing on the shore. This helps the group stay as they are.

They are part of a larger group known as the Andamanese peoples. The Sentinelese are very private and choose to live in voluntary isolation. They have had very little contact with the outside world. This makes them a very vulnerable group of people. Most people who try to visit the island are met with hostility.

Life on the island depends on hunting and gathering. The Sentinelese do not practice agriculture or farming. Instead, they hunt land animals using spears, bows, and arrows. They also collect seafood like mollusks and mud crabs. They often roast shells to eat.

For travel on the water, they use canoes. They move these canoes with long poles rather than using oars. Their homes are small, temporary huts. These huts are built on four poles with roofs made of leaves. Men often wear bark strings and carry daggers in waist belts.

History shows that many outsiders have tried to reach the island. In 1771, a ship called the Diligent saw lights on the shore. In 1867, a merchant ship named the Nineveh crashed on a nearby reef. The survivors were attacked by islanders using arrows. Later, in 1880, a British officer named Maurice Vidal Portman led a group to the island.

His men captured six people, including four children. Sadly, the man and woman died from illness after arriving in Port Blair. Portman later sent the children back with gifts to try to be friendly.

It is very hard to know exactly how many Sentinelese people live there. Because they are so isolated, there has been no official census. Some estimates say there are as few as 15 or 35 people. Most experts believe the population is between 50 and 200 individuals. In 2001, an official Indian census recorded 21 men and 18 women. In 2014, researchers saw seven men, six women, and three children. A 2016 handbook estimated the group is between 100 and 150 people.

Because the Sentinelese stay so private, their language is a mystery. It is unclassified because no one has studied it closely. It is different from the languages used by the Jarawa or Onge tribes. To protect them, the Indian government made the island a tribal reserve in 1956. This law makes it illegal to travel to the island. Armed patrols watch the waters to stop outsiders from coming near. This helps keep the Sentinelese safe from new diseases and unwanted visitors.

They are part of the broader Andamanese peoples. This group includes others like the Jarawas, the Onge, and the Shompen. The Sentinelese are recognized as a particularly vulnerable tribal group. They live in voluntary isolation from the rest of the world. This isolation makes them one of the most reclusive societies on Earth.

The island itself is roughly square in shape. It features a wide seashore surrounded by a littoral forest. This forest gives way to a dense tropical evergreen forest. The environment is characterized by a tropical climate and coral reefs.

The Sentinelese survive through hunting and gathering. They do not practice agriculture or farming. Instead, they use spears, bows, and arrows to hunt land animals. For food from the sea, they gather molluscan shells and mud crabs. They often roast shells at their settlements.

Daily life involves specific tools and traditional clothing. Both men and women wear strings made of bark. Men often carry daggers in waist belts. They also use various ornaments like necklaces and headbands. Their homes are small, temporary huts. These structures are built on four poles with slanted, leaf-covered roofs. For water travel, they use canoes. Unlike many other groups, they move these canoes using long poles instead of oars or paddles.

They use these canoes mostly for fishing in the lagoons.

Because the Sentinelese are so isolated, their language remains unclassified. Researchers have not been able to study it closely enough to categorize it. It is known to be different from the Jarawa language. The Anthropological Survey of India believes it is also mutually unintelligible with the Onge language. This means the two groups cannot understand each other when speaking. This linguistic barrier is a direct result of their long-term separation from other Andamanese tribes.

Historical records of the Sentinelese are sparse and often involve conflict. The first recorded mention was in 1771 by a ship called the Diligent. In 1867, the merchant vessel Nineveh crashed on a nearby reef. The survivors were attacked by islanders using arrows. Later, in 1880, a British officer named Maurice Vidal Portman led an expedition to the island.

His team captured six islanders, including four children. Sadly, the man and woman died of illness in Port Blair. Portman later returned the children to the island with gifts to encourage friendship.

Estimating the population of the Sentinelese is very difficult. No rigorous census has ever been conducted on the island. Estimates vary wildly, ranging from as few as 15 to as many as 500 people. Most researchers believe the population is between 50 and 200 individuals. The 1971 census estimated 82 people, while the 1981 census estimated 100. In 2001, an official Indian census recorded 21 men and 18 women. However, this survey was done from a distance and may not be accurate.

To protect this vulnerable group, the Indian government took legal action. In 1956, the government declared North Sentinel Island a tribal reserve. This regulation prohibits travel within the island's boundaries. It also prohibits photography. The government maintains a constant armed patrol in the surrounding waters. This patrol is meant to prevent outsiders from intruding. These laws aim to protect the Sentinelese from outside diseases and unwanted contact.
