The Seneca Falls Convention was a very important meeting for women's rights. It was the first meeting organized by women to talk about their rights. Before this, women had very few choices in life. They could not own property or sign legal contracts. Most jobs paid women about half of what men earned. Many women felt they needed to change these unfair rules. This meeting helped start a big movement for equality.

To prepare for the meeting, leaders had to work hard. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott were two main leaders. They met in London in 1840 to talk about ending slavery. At that meeting, they were not allowed to speak or vote. This experience made them want to start their own meeting. They wanted to discuss social and civil rights for women. They planned the event to take place in New York.

The convention took place in July 1848 in Seneca Falls, New York. It lasted for two days at the Wesleyan Chapel. The leaders sat around a mahogany tea table to work. They wrote a famous document called the Declaration of Sentiments. This paper listed many ways women were not treated fairly. They wanted the law to treat men and women as equals.

Many people attended the meeting to hear the discussions. There were about 300 people at the convention. Exactly 100 people signed the Declaration of Sentiments. During the meeting, there was a big debate about voting. Some people, including Lucretia Mott, were worried about this idea. However, Frederick Douglass spoke up to support women's right to vote. Because of his speech, the group kept the idea in the document.

This meeting changed how people thought about women in society. It led to more meetings in places like Rochester and Worcester. By 1851, voting became a main goal for women. The movement grew even stronger after the Seneca Falls Convention. It helped people see that women deserved the same rights as men. This event is still remembered as a major step in history.
