The Self-Strengthening Movement was a time of big changes in China. It happened during the late Qing dynasty. This was a period when leaders wanted to make their country much stronger.

They wanted to fix weaknesses in the military and the government. These problems became clear after several difficult wars and rebellions. One major event was the Taiping Rebellion, which lasted from 1850 to 1864. Another was the Opium Wars, where foreign powers showed they had better weapons. The movement was also called the Westernization or Western Affairs Movement.

Leaders knew they had to learn new things to protect their land.

To make these changes, leaders focused on many different areas. They worked on diplomacy, which is how countries talk to each other. They also worked on the military, the economy, and schools.

One way they did this was by building new offices. The Zongli Yamen was a new office for foreign affairs. They also built schools to teach new subjects. Students studied English, French, Russian, and German. They also learned about math and astronomy.

These schools helped train people to work in a modern world.

Many important people helped lead these reforms. In 1861, Prince Gong and Wen Xiang proposed a new office. Prince Gong became a leader who helped run the government.

Other officials like Zeng Guofan and Li Hongzhang were very active too. Zeng Guofan led his own army to fight rebels. He used Western weapons and training to help his soldiers. Li Hongzhang was a very successful official in Tianjin. He helped build many things like shipping lines and telegraphs.

These leaders wanted to use new technology to help China.

There were many specific things built during this time. Leaders established arsenals, which are places where weapons are made.

The Jiangnan Arsenal translated 143 Western books between 1868 and 1879. This helped people learn about science and new ideas. They also built the Fuzhou Navy Yard to make ships.

A group called the Maritime Customs Service helped collect money. This money grew from 8.5 million taels of silver in 1865 to 14.5 million in 1885. This money paid for new schools and big projects.

These numbers show how much the government was growing.

These changes helped the Qing dynasty stay in power for fifty more years. The movement brought modern industry and better weapons to China. However, most leaders still held onto old ways of thinking. They wanted new machines, but they did not want to change how society worked.

The progress came to a sudden stop in 1895. This happened after China lost the First Sino-Japanese War. Later, in 1901, another set of reforms began. This happened after more conflicts with other nations. The movement showed how hard it is to change a whole country.
