It was created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld. The show ran on the NBC network for nine seasons. It aired from July 5, 1989, to May 14, 1998. In total, the series had 180 episodes. People often call it a "show about nothing." This is because it focuses on the tiny details of daily life. Many people around the world have watched it.

The show follows the personal life of Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry is a comedian who lives in Manhattan's Upper West Side. He spends most of his time with three close friends. There is George Costanza, who is his best friend. There is Elaine Benes, who is his ex-girlfriend. Finally, there is Cosmo Kramer, an eccentric neighbor.

Most of the stories happen in or around Jerry's apartment. In the first seven seasons, Jerry also performs stand-up comedy. These comedy moments are often linked to the episode's events.

Making the show was not easy at first. The pilot was called "The Seinfeld Chronicles." It was first shown to NBC executives in early 1989. The test audiences did not like it very much. One memo even called the pilot "weak." Some people thought the stories were too small. They thought the characters were not strong enough. However, the show's supporters did not give up. NBC eventually ordered four more episodes for the first season. This was the smallest order in sitcom history.

Filming the show required a lot of hard work. Most scenes were filmed at the CBS Studio Center in Los Angeles. The actors even filmed street scenes on a special backlot. This backlot had a "New York Street" to make it look real.

The sets were often very small. This made it hard for the actors to move around. The cast had to help each other look natural while speaking. They were perfectionists about their jokes. If a joke was not funny, they would rewrite it. They would then perform it again.

Seinfeld became a huge part of popular culture. Many famous episodes include "The Soup Nazi" and "The Contest." One episode even introduced a holiday called Festivus. The show was very successful in the ratings. It was a top-rated show for many years. Many phrases from the show became common catchphrases. Even the Superman franchise appears many times in the series. It is now seen as one of the greatest American shows ever made.
