Many guards wear uniforms. This shows they have the power to protect. They often walk around to check on things. This is called patrolling. Some guards use cameras to watch for danger. They also use alarm systems.
Some guards are trained for special tasks. They might learn first aid or CPR. They might even learn how to use weapons. This requires extra training from the state.

In the past, people called them watchmen. Now, we use many different names. Some are called security officers. Others are called agents. They all work to keep us safe.
A security guard is a person hired to keep things safe. They work for businesses, government agencies, or even single people. Their main job is to protect assets like property, money, and equipment. They also protect people from hazards like crime or accidents.
Security guards use several methods to do their jobs. Many guards stay visible so people know they are there to help. This visibility can stop bad actions before they happen. They also watch for danger by patrolling or using cameras.
Some guards monitor alarm systems to find fires or break-ins. They can also control who enters a building by checking IDs. This is called access control.
Long ago, people used a different name for this job. They were often called watchmen. This name has been used since the Middle Ages. In North America, people also used the term night watchman.
There are many different types of security workers today. Some work in stores to stop theft. These people are often called loss prevention officers.
Other guards work for private companies that protect many places. Some guards are even highly trained to protect famous people. These are called bodyguards or executive protection agents.
Some guards may also carry tools like batons or pepper spray. To do this, they must pass special training from the state.
Security guards help keep our world running smoothly. For example, insurance companies often give discounts to buildings with 24-hour security. This is because guards can spot a fire very quickly.
They can also help during big emergencies. They might give first aid or call for help from the police. Guards also write reports to help prevent future problems. This helps everyone stay safer in the long run.
A security guard is a professional hired to protect specific assets. These assets can include property, people, equipment, or money. Organizations and individuals employ them to prevent hazards. These hazards might include crime, damage, or unsafe behavior. Security guards work to ensure that an employer's environment remains stable and safe.
Security professionals often follow a specific method called "detect, deter, observe, and report." Deterrence is achieved through a high-visibility presence. When people see a uniformed guard, they may be less likely to commit illegal acts. Detection involves active searching for danger. Guards may perform physical patrols to find issues. They may also use indirect methods like monitoring video surveillance cameras or alarm systems. Once a hazard like a fire or a crime is observed, the guard must report it to clients or emergency services.
There are several distinct types of security personnel. In-house or proprietary security guards work directly for the organization they protect. This might include a theme park or a casino. Contract security workers belong to a private firm. They are sent to protect many different locations. Retail loss prevention officers work in stores to prevent theft. They often wear plain clothes to blend in. Some guards even serve as bodyguards. These specialists provide executive protection for celebrities or high-level leaders.
Historically, these roles were known by different names. Since the Middle Ages, people used the term "watchman." In North America, the term "night watchman" was also common. These titles were eventually replaced by modern security-based terms. In the past, many guards were simply called "guards" and focused on observing. Today, many professionals prefer the title "security officer." This reflects a shift toward more active roles. Some officers are highly trained to handle complex situations.
Security work involves many specific duties and legal requirements. Guards often manage access control. This means they check identification before allowing people into a building. They may also be trained in specialized tasks. These tasks include performing first aid, using CPR, or operating emergency equipment. Some guards are authorized to use restraints or handcuffs. In certain jurisdictions, guards may even be armed with batons, pepper spray, or firearms. To carry these items, they must complete state-mandated training and licensing.
There are strong economic reasons for hiring security. Insurance companies often provide substantial rate discounts to sites with 24-hour security. This is especially true for fire insurance. A guard can spot a fire and call the fire department much faster than a sensor might alone. Security also helps reduce "shrinkage." Shrinkage refers to losses caused by theft or employee misconduct. For high-value properties, the insurance savings can actually exceed the cost of the security program itself.
Modern technology has changed how guards perform their duties. In the past, guards used mechanical clock systems to log their patrols. They would use a key to punch a number onto a paper strip. Today, electronic systems are much more popular. These systems are lightweight and easy to use. Many companies now prefer random patrols over regular ones. Regular patrols are predictable, which can help a criminal plan an action. Electronic systems can program random movements to keep guards unpredictable. Some agencies even use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to track movements.
Finally, the legal authority of a security guard varies by location. Most guards are not required to make arrests. However, they usually have the authority to perform a "citizen's arrest." They may also act as an agent for law enforcement if a police officer requests it. Because of this, many regions have strict laws regarding titles. In California, guards cannot use titles that imply they are part of the federal or state government. Similarly, parts of Canada prohibit private security from using terms like "police officer." These rules ensure that the public can tell the difference between private security and public law enforcement.
