The Secret History of the Mongols is a very special book.

The book tells stories in a specific order. It begins with legends about where the Mongols came from. One legend says a wolf and a deer started the Mongol line. Then it moves to the life of a boy named Temüjin. Temüjin was the name Genghis Khan had when he was young. The story follows his many struggles and his many battles. Finally, it describes the great conquests of the Mongol leaders. It even ends with the thoughts of Ögedei Khan.
We do not know exactly who wrote this book. It was written for the Mongol royal family. It was written sometime after Genghis Khan died in 1227. The author used the Middle Mongol language and Mongolian script. Some people think it was finished in the Year of the Mouse. This might have been in the year 1228. The book was written near the Kherlen River at a place called Khodoe Aral. This makes the book a very old piece of history.
Finding the full book was a long journey.

This book is like a time machine for historians. It shows us how different tribes lived and worked together. It gives us a look at Mongol culture without outside influences. Some experts use it to learn about ancient languages. Other experts use it to study the way people organized their lives. It is even a piece of classic literature. In Mongolia, a special copy is kept in the Government Palace in Ulaanbaatar. It is a treasure for the whole world to see.
The Secret History of the Mongols is a foundational literary work. It is the oldest surviving text written in the Mongolic languages. This book provides a detailed account of the life of Genghis Khan. It also describes the reign of his successor, Ögedei Khan. Scholars consider it the most significant native Mongolian account of this era. It serves as a vital primary source for understanding the Mongol Empire.
The text was written in the Middle Mongol language. The author used the traditional Mongolian script for the writing. We do not know the specific name of the author. The work was created for the Mongol royal family. It was written sometime after Genghis Khan died in 1227. A colophon, or a note at the end, provides some clues. It says the book was finished in the Year of the Mouse. This took place at Khodoe Aral on the banks of the Kherlen River. Some scholars suggest this date was as early as 1228. Others believe the text was updated later to include Ögedei Khan's reign.
The narrative begins with semi-mythical genealogy. It starts with the legend of Batachiqan. Legend says a blue-grey wolf and a fallow doe begat him. The story then moves to the life of Alan Gua. She was a widow who bore three sons with a supernatural glowing man. One of these sons was Bodonchar, the founder of the Borjigin clan. This clan was the lineage of Genghis Khan. The story then transitions into the real life of Temüjin. Temüjin was the birth name of Genghis Khan. The text covers his birth around 1160 and his many struggles. It details his rise to power and his title in 1206.
Preserving this book was a complex process over many centuries. The full Mongolian body survived through a 15th-century version. This version was created during the Ming dynasty. It used Chinese characters to transcribe Mongolian pronunciation. This helped interpreters understand the text. This version was later included in the Yongle Encyclopedia. In the 17th century, a monk named Lubsang-Danzin wrote the Altan Tobchi. This chronicle contains about two-thirds of the Secret History. This version was discovered in 1926 in Dornod.
Historians find immense value in this specific text. It offers a unique view of Mongol culture. Unlike later texts, it is free from Buddhist influence. This makes it a rich source for studying pre-Classical Mongol. It provides vivid details of 12th and 13th-century tribal life. It shows how the Mongols organized their civilization. Some scholars debate its absolute historical accuracy. However, many agree it is a faithful description of tribal life. It complements other historical records from Persian and Chinese sources.
The book has reached a global audience through translation. It has been translated into more than 40 languages. The Russian monk Palladius was the first to translate it into a foreign language. He did this in 1866 while in Beijing. Later, scholars like Erich Haenisch and Paul Pelliot worked on reconstructions. In the English-speaking world, Francis Woodman Cleaves published a full translation in 1982. Igor de Rachewiltz later provided a massive two-volume set of translations. This work included extensive notes on Mongol culture.
Today, the Secret History is treated as classic literature. It is studied in both Mongolia and across the world. The Mongolian government recognizes its great importance. In 2004, a decree was made regarding a special copy. A copy covered with golden plates is kept in Ulaanbaatar. It sits near the Government Palace. This book remains a bridge to the ancient Mongol world. It connects modern readers to the origins of a great empire.
