One important moment happened in 1221 at the city of Gurganj. His older brothers, Jochi and Chagatai, could not agree on how to fight. Becoming the leader was not a simple task for him. After Genghis Khan died in 1227, the empire needed a new head. Ögedei's younger brother, Tolui, led the empire for two years first. This was called a regency. Finally, in 1229, Ögedei was elected as the supreme khan.

He was chosen during a large meeting called a kurultai. This meeting took place on the Kherlen River at Kodoe Aral. He even tried to say no to the job three times. However, he was eventually proclaimed the leader on September 13, 1229.

As khan, Ögedei led his armies to many new places. In 1230, he sent a large force to invade Persia. This army was led by Chormaqan Noyan and had many soldiers. The Mongols also began an invasion of Korea in 1231. In China, they worked to finish the conquest of the Jin dynasty by 1234.

As the third son of Genghis Khan, he played a vital role in expanding the empire. He was born in 1186 AD to Temüjin and Börte Ujin. During his youth, he participated in the many wars that built his father's power. He even survived a heavy wound at the Battle of Khalakhaljid Sands when he was 17. His life was defined by both military leadership and the complex task of governing a massive state.

Ögedei's rise to power was shaped by family conflict and military success. During the siege of the city of Gurganj in 1221, his older brothers Jochi and Chagatai argued over strategy. To resolve this, Genghis Khan appointed Ögedei as the sole commander of the siege. His successful capture of the city helped establish his reputation as a capable leader. Following further infighting among his elder brothers, Ögedei was confirmed as the heir to the throne.

After Genghis Khan died in 1227, the empire entered a transitional period. For two years, Ögedei's younger brother Tolui led a regency. In 1229, a large political assembly known as a kurultai was held at Kodoe Aral on the Kherlen River.

During this meeting, Ögedei was elected as the supreme khan. Although he ritually declined the position three times, he was officially proclaimed khan on September 13, 1229. His son, Güyük, would eventually succeed him.

As khan, Ögedei directed massive military campaigns across Asia and Europe. In 1230, he authorized Chormaqan Noyan to lead an army of 30,000 to 50,000 soldiers into Persia. This campaign successfully subdued the Khwarazmian prince Jalal al-Din Mangburni and added Persia to the empire.

In 1231, he initiated invasions of Korea. By 1234, his forces completed the conquest of the Jin dynasty in China. His military reach even extended to the Caucasus, where Mongol forces captured cities like Tiflis and Ganja.

Ögedei's armies also moved deep into Europe during his reign. Under the command of Batu Khan and the general Subutai, Mongol forces penetrated the western steppes. They defeated armies in Poland at the Battle of Legnica and in Hungary at the Battle of Mohi.

Some scholars believe the Mongols retreated from Europe because they needed to find a successor after Ögedei's death. Others suggest that logistical difficulties prevented further invasion. Regardless, these campaigns showed the immense scale of the Mongol military reach.

Beyond warfare, Ögedei was a skilled administrator who built the foundations of a state. He worked with officials like Yelü Chucai to develop organized systems for the empire. He established the ortogh, which were trading systems that helped commerce. He also created methods for tax collection and regional bureaucracies to manage legal and economic affairs. In the 1230s, he founded the new Mongol capital city of Karakorum.

Ögedei is often remembered for his personality and his ability to organize. While some historical accounts mention his struggles with alcoholism, he was also viewed as charismatic, intelligent, and good-natured. He even oversaw the minting of currency, such as the Islamic-style gold dinars found in Karakorum.
