The Second Opium War was a major military conflict between 1856 and 1860.

The war grew from tensions following the First Opium War in 1842. Britain wanted better trade and diplomatic relations than the Treaty of Nanking provided. They sought to open all of China to British companies. They also wanted to legalize the opium trade and remove internal transit duties on imports. In 1856, a specific event triggered the outbreak of fighting. Chinese officials in Canton seized a cargo ship named the Arrow. The ship was registered in Hong Kong and flew the British flag. Although its registration had expired, the British consul, Harry Parkes, viewed the seizure as an insult.
Conflict escalated when Ye Mingchen, the Viceroy of Liangguang, refused to release all the arrested sailors. The British responded by shelling the city of Canton. France soon joined the alliance to support Britain. The French cited the execution of a missionary, Auguste Chapdelaine, as their reason for intervening.
The military campaign moved through several distinct stages. First, the allied forces attacked and occupied Canton in late 1857. This city had a population of over 1,000,000 people. The capture was achieved by fewer than 6,000 allied troops. During this stage, Ye Mingchen was captured and eventually exiled to India. After controlling Canton, the alliance moved north toward the capital. In May 1858, they captured the Taku Forts near Tianjin.
Negotiations initially led to the Treaty of Tientsin in 1858. However, the Xianfeng Emperor refused to ratify this agreement. This refusal led to a restart of the war by the Qing general Sengge Rinchen. The allied forces brought reinforcements from Hong Kong to defeat his troops. As the alliance advanced toward Beijing, several British and French officers were captured as hostages. Some of these captives were tortured or murdered. In response to these events, Lord Elgin ordered the looting and burning of the Old Summer Palace.
The war officially ended with the Convention of Peking on October 24, 1860.
The Second Opium War had massive geopolitical consequences. It demonstrated the growing power of Western military technology against the Qing dynasty. The war changed the map of Asia by shifting control of various territories. It also created a sense of national crisis among Chinese officials. They realized that conflicts with Western powers were no longer traditional wars. Instead, they were part of a larger shift in the global balance of power. This era marked a turning point in modern Chinese history and international relations.
