Foreign groups also wanted to change things. Britain and France fought wars with China. These were called the Opium Wars. During these wars, the Old Summer Palace was burned. The emperor had to flee to a place called Jehol. He lost land in Manchuria to Russia during this time.
His health became very poor. He died in 1861 at age 30.
The Xianfeng Emperor was a leader of the Qing dynasty in China.
His time as ruler was a very hard job. He inherited an empire that was already in crisis. His reign name was Xianfeng. This name means "universal prosperity." However, the country did not feel prosperous at that time. Many different groups began to fight against the government. These fights happened in many different parts of China. The trouble lasted for many years. It was a very unstable time for the people living there.
Many large rebellions broke out during his reign. The Taiping Rebellion started in southern China in 1850. A leader named Hong Xiuquan led this group. They captured the city of Nanjing in 1853. In the north, the Nian Rebellion also began. There were other uprisings like the Miao and Panthay rebellions too. These wars caused many millions of deaths. They caused great damage to the land. The fighting did not stop until much later.
Foreign powers also brought new problems to China.
His health grew worse as the wars continued.
The Xianfeng Emperor was the eighth emperor of the Qing dynasty.
Yizhu assumed the throne in 1850 at the age of 19. His reign title was "Xianfeng," which translates to "universal prosperity." However, this name did not match the reality of his rule. He inherited an empire facing many deep crises. Shortly after he became emperor, several massive rebellions broke out. These internal conflicts would last for many years. They were part of a series of popular revolts that nearly destroyed the dynasty. The empire faced both internal uprisings and foreign military challenges at the same time.
The Taiping Rebellion began in December 1850 in southern China. It was led by Hong Xiuquan, a leader of a Christian sect. This rebellion spread through many provinces with incredible speed. In 1853, the Taiping rebels captured the city of Nanjing. They renamed the city Tianjing and made it their capital. At the same time, the Nian Rebellion started in North China. The Nian used highly mobile cavalry-based armies. These rebels posed a serious threat to the capital, Beijing. The Qing imperial forces suffered many defeats against these groups.
Other ethnic uprisings also occurred during this period. The Miao Rebellion began in 1854 and lasted until 1873. The Panthay Rebellion also broke out in the Yunnan province in 1856. These various revolts ravaged large parts of the country. They resulted in millions of deaths and caused widespread destruction. The Xianfeng Emperor sent many prominent officials to stop them. These included leaders like Zeng Guofan and Sengge Rinchen. Despite their efforts, the rebellions were only partially controlled. They would not be fully quelled until the reign of his successor.
Foreign conflicts added even more pressure to the empire. The Second Opium War began after minor military clashes on the coast. The Xianfeng Emperor believed in Chinese superiority. He refused to meet the demands of European powers. He also rejected the idea of exchanged consular relationships. This led to a breakdown in negotiations. In 1860, Anglo-French forces entered Beijing. They burned the Old Summer Palace during this conflict. The emperor was forced to flee to his imperial estate in Jehol.
During this time, China also lost territory to the Russian Empire. Under the Treaty of Aigun in 1858, land was ceded to Russia. This area was between the Stanovoy Range and the Amur River. Later, the Treaty of Beijing in 1860 ceded more land east of the Ussuri River. The Russians used this newly annexed area to found the city of Vladivostok. The emperor's health declined rapidly due to these mounting losses. He died on August 22, 1861, at the age of 30. He passed away at the Chengde Mountain Resort in Jehol.
After his death, his six-year-old son Zaichun became the Tongzhi Emperor. The Xianfeng Emperor had appointed an eight-member regency council to help the child. This council included men like Sushun and Zaiyuan. However, this power structure did not last long. Empress Dowager Cixi and Empress Dowager Ci'an joined Prince Gong in a coup. This event is known as the Xinyou Coup. They ousted the eight regents from power. Empress Dowager Cixi eventually rose to sole power. She maintained control over the Qing government for the next 47 years.
