Some parks also have water parks, like Aquatica in Orlando. At night, some parks have special events with bright lights and music. These events might include shows with sea lions or even fireworks. Every park offers a mix of animal shows and thrilling rides.

SeaWorld has a very long history that began many years ago. In 1964, four graduates from UCLA founded the first park.

They originally wanted to build an underwater restaurant. They changed their plan and opened SeaWorld San Diego on March 21, 1964. The first park was a big success with many visitors. Later, a park opened in Aurora, Ohio, in 1970. This Ohio park only opened during the summer months because of the cold weather. Eventually, the company grew and opened more parks in different states.

Many different companies have owned SeaWorld over the years. In 1989, the Anheuser-Busch company bought the parks. They spent millions of dollars to make the parks even better. Later, the company was sold to the Blackstone Group in 2009. In 2024, the company changed its name to United Parks & Resorts.

SeaWorld is now a major competitor to other big theme parks. It also has a park in Abu Dhabi, which opened in 2023. This was the first SeaWorld park located outside of the United States.

SeaWorld has faced many changes and hard times too. Some people have criticized the way the parks care for animals. A movie called Blackfish led to fewer people visiting the parks for a while. Because of this, SeaWorld changed how it does things. In 2016, they decided to end their orca breeding program. They also began to phase out theatrical orca shows in some locations. Today, the parks focus more on conservation and animal rescue efforts. They want to teach guests about protecting the ocean and its creatures.

Managed by United Parks & Resorts, these locations combine zoological exhibits with high-thrill attractions. The parks host various shows featuring marine mammals, specifically dolphins, orcas (also known as killer whales), and pinnipeds like sea lions. Beyond animal presentations, the parks offer diverse entertainment, including water parks and intense roller coasters. This combination of education and adrenaline makes SeaWorld a major competitor to companies like Disney Experiences and Universal Destinations & Experiences.

The experience at a SeaWorld park involves a sequence of animal interactions and mechanical rides. Visitors often begin with educational presentations, such as the Orca Encounter, which focuses on the natural behaviors of killer whales. These shows are designed to provide insight into marine biology through live demonstrations. Following these, guests often move toward high-speed attractions. For example, the Journey to Atlantis ride combines the elements of a roller coaster with a splashdown mechanism. This creates a multi-stage experience where riders move from high-speed tracks to sudden water encounters.

Each SeaWorld location offers distinct types of attractions and specialized themes. SeaWorld San Diego features shows like Sea Lions Live and the nightly Electric Ocean event, which uses music and lights. The park also hosts rides like Manta, a family launch coaster, and the dive coaster Emperor. SeaWorld Orlando provides a massive selection of eight roller coasters, including the Kraken and the Mako hyper coaster. Orlando also features Pipeline, the world's first surf coaster, which uses a stand-up design. SeaWorld San Antonio offers different thrills, such as the Steel Eel coaster, which reaches a height of 150 feet.

The history of SeaWorld began in 1964 with four graduates from UCLA. Milton Shedd, Ken Norris, David Demott, and George Millay originally intended to build an underwater restaurant. When that concept proved unfeasible, they pivoted to creating a marine life show and park instead. SeaWorld San Diego opened on March 21, 1964, with only six attractions and a few dolphins and sea lions. Despite its small start, the park was an immediate success, attracting over 400,000 guests in its first year.

As the company grew, it expanded into new territories and faced complex ownership changes. A park in Aurora, Ohio, opened on May 29, 1970, though its harsh winters meant it only operated from mid-May to mid-September. In 1973, SeaWorld Orlando opened, benefiting from the tourism surge created by the nearby Walt Disney World Resort. Ownership shifted significantly in 1989 when the Anheuser-Busch Company purchased the parks.

This acquisition included several other properties like Cypress Gardens. Later, in 2009, the Busch Entertainment division was sold to the Blackstone Group, eventually leading to the current era of United Parks & Resorts.

The company has navigated significant challenges regarding animal welfare and public perception. In 2013, the documentary film Blackfish sparked intense public debate and criticism regarding the treatment of orcas. This led to a measurable decrease in attendance, profits, and the company's share price. In response to these pressures and state legislation in California, SeaWorld announced in 2016 that it would end its in-park orca breeding program. They also began phasing out theatrical orca shows in certain locations.

To recover, the company increased marketing regarding its conservation and rescue efforts.

SeaWorld's influence now extends globally through new models of operation. While most parks are owned directly, the company announced plans for its first franchised park in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

This international location on Yas Island opened to the public on May 24, 2023. This expansion represents a shift toward a park model that does not rely on killer whales. By diversifying its attractions and focusing on different species, the company continues to connect with global audiences through marine science and themed entertainment.
