The history of the seat belt involves many different inventors and eras. English engineer George Cayley invented early versions for his glider in the mid-19th century. By 1928, all aircraft were required to use them. In 1949, Nash became the first American car manufacturer to offer them as an option. However, customers did not want them, and only 1,000 were used after the first year. In 1955, Roger W. Griswold and Hugh DeHaven patented the first modern three-point restraint.

Later, Nils Bohlin developed the modern three-point belt for Volvo in 1959. Bohlin proved its effectiveness by studying 28,000 accidents in Sweden. His research showed that belted occupants were not fatally injured in accidents below 60 mph if the passenger compartment stayed intact.

Safety regulations have changed significantly due to these discoveries. In 1966, the United States passed the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. The first compulsory seat belt law began in 1970 in Victoria, Australia. This happened after testing Hemco seat belts in police vehicles reduced officer injuries. In the U.S., mandatory laws began appearing in the 1980s. Some people even resisted these laws by cutting seat belts out of their cars. Today, all new cars sold in the U.S. must have a lap and shoulder belt in the center rear seat.

The effectiveness of these devices is supported by significant data. An analysis in 1984 showed that front-seat passengers saw fatality reductions between 20% and 55%. Major injury reductions ranged from 25% to 60%. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about half.
