Sea pens are amazing groups of living things that live on the ocean floor. They are called colonial organisms because many tiny animals live together as one unit. These animals belong to a large group called cnidarians.

You can find them in many places around the world. They live in both warm and cold waters. Some live in shallow areas near the shore. Others live in very deep seas. They are important because they provide homes for small fish.

Each sea pen works like a tiny, busy city. A single polyp grows into a stiff, tall stalk called a rachis. This stalk has a bulbous base called a peduncle. The peduncle acts like a root to hold the colony in sand or mud.

Other polyps branch out from this center to do special jobs. Some polyps are for feeding and have tiny stinging parts. Others help move water or make new babies. The whole colony is kept strong by calcium carbonate. This is a hard material that forms a rod and tiny spikes inside them.

Scientists have studied these creatures for a long time. We know sea pens have been around for a very long time. The oldest fossils come from the Burgess Shale. These fossils are from the Cambrian period.

Some even older fossils might be from the Ediacaran period. Experts are still deciding exactly what those older fossils are. Today, there are about 235 accepted species of sea pens. They belong to many different families like the Pennatulidae. This long history shows how well they have lived in the sea.

Sea pens have many interesting facts about their lives. Some species, like the tall sea pen, can grow quite large. The orange sea pen is known for its bright color.

Many sea pens live in deep water where the ocean is calm. If they are touched, some can glow with a green light. This is called bioluminescence. They can also squeeze water out of their bodies to hide. Some sea pens may even live for 100 years or more. They show their age through growth rings in their central rod.

Learning about sea pens helps us understand how life works in the ocean. They sit in the path of water currents to catch food. Their main food is plankton, which is tiny drifting life.

They must stay in place to eat, but they can move if they need to. They also face many hard jobs from predators. Sea stars and nudibranchs like to eat them. By living in large groups, sea pens can sometimes stay safe. They are a wonderful part of the deep blue sea.
