This movement of air works in a very specific way. When the sun shines, the land surface gets hot quickly. This heat warms the air sitting right above the ground. This warm air rises up through a process called convection. As the warm air rises, it creates a difference in air pressure. The air over the sea has higher pressure than the air over the land. This pressure difference pushes the cool sea air toward the coast.

At night, the whole pattern changes direction. This new wind is called a land breeze. It blows from the land toward the sea. This happens because land cools down much faster than water does after sunset. When the land becomes cooler than the ocean, the air pressure changes again. The air over the water becomes lower in pressure than the air over the land. This causes the wind to flow from the land out to the sea.

These winds can create interesting weather patterns. When the cool sea air meets the warm land air, it creates a boundary. This is called a sea-breeze front. If the air is moist, this front can form white, puffy cumulus clouds. Sometimes, these clouds can grow into large thunderstorms. In Florida, sea breezes from the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico can meet in the middle. This collision can create very strong storms and lightning.

In some places, these breezes are very powerful. In Southeast Australia, there is a wind called the southerly buster. It brings a sudden change in wind and temperature. This wind can cause temperatures to drop by many degrees in just a few minutes. People also use these daily wind changes for energy. Some wind farms are built near the coast to catch these breezes. They use the natural movement of the air to help work.

The strength of a sea breeze depends on the thermal contrast. The greater the temperature difference between land and sea, the stronger the breeze. However, an offshore wind can stop a sea breeze from forming. An offshore wind is any wind blowing over open water. If an offshore wind is stronger than 5 meters per second, it may oppose the sea breeze. Once the sun sets, the land cools down much faster than the water. This causes the sea breeze to dissipate. As the land temperature approaches the ocean temperature, the cycle shifts.

At night, the process reverses to create a land breeze. This occurs if the land becomes cooler than the adjacent sea surface. When this happens, the air pressure over the water becomes lower than the pressure over the land. This sets up a wind that flows from the land to the sea. Unlike the daytime sea breeze, which is driven by convection, the nighttime land breeze is driven by convergence. The land breeze is usually shallower than the daytime sea breeze. If there is enough moisture and instability, the land breeze can cause showers or thunderstorms over the water.

Sea breezes can create a weather front called a sea-breeze front. This is also known as a convergence zone. This front is a boundary where cold air from the sea meets warmer air from the land. Florida provides a notable example of sea breeze activity. The state is a peninsula bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. During the hurricane season, from June through September or October, winds typically blow off the water. This makes Florida one of the places most often struck by lightning on Earth. On calm summer afternoons, sea breezes from both coasts can collide in the middle of the state. This collision can create especially severe storms. These storms can produce significant hail due to tremendous updrafts in the atmosphere.

In Southeast Australia, a specific type of sea breeze occurs. It is called the southerly buster. This wind causes an abrupt and squally change in the wind. It can bring gusts in excess of 60 kilometers per hour. The southerly buster typically arrives on hot days and brings a dramatic temperature drop. In some cases, temperatures can fall by as much as 10 degrees Celsius in just a few minutes. This happens because a shallow cold front interacts with the Great Dividing Range. The mountains create a channeling effect that moves the gale winds across the coast.

Humans can utilize these natural wind patterns for energy. Wind farms are sometimes situated near coasts to take advantage of these daily fluctuations. A nearshore wind farm is a specific type of offshore wind farm. These are located on shallow coastal waters. They are designed to capture both sea breezes and land breezes. Most other offshore wind farms are located further out at sea. Those farms rely on prevailing winds rather than the local sea and land breezes. This shows how even small, localized weather patterns can be useful to technology.
