This happens when a heavy mass of air moves into a lighter area below. Air density is how much stuff is packed into a space. Because temperature changes how much air is packed together, these winds are often cold. Most katabatic winds are caused by a thing called radiative cooling. This is when the ground loses heat after the sun goes down.

This cooling makes the air near the slope very cold and heavy.

There are two main ways these winds start working. The most common way is through that nightly cooling of the ground. As the slope surface cools, the air sitting on it becomes dense. Gravity then pulls this heavy air down into the valley.

The second way is through what scientists call fall winds. These do not come from the ground cooling down. Instead, a large mass of cold air moves over the top of a slope. This might happen when a cold front arrives or when cool sea air moves in.

People have given different names to these winds all over the world. In Greenland, they are called piteraq winds. These are strongest when a low pressure area moves near the coast. In the Adriatic, these winds are known as the Bora. The Ore Mountains have the Bohemian Wind, also called Böhmwind. In southern California, people know them as Santa Ana winds. In Japan, they are called oroshi. Even New Zealand has its own version called "the Barber."

These winds can be incredibly strong in certain places. In Antarctica, they blow off huge, high ice sheets. The weight of the cold air and the height of the ice create huge gravitational energy. These winds can reach speeds higher than a hurricane.

In some parts of Antarctica, the wind is so strong it scours the snow away. This creates places called the McMurdo Dry Valleys. These areas are also known as Antarctic oases. In Alaska and South America, they are called williwaws. These can be faster than 60 miles per hour and are dangerous to ships.

Katabatic winds can change how a landscape looks. Because the air is moving down, it is often very dry. This dryness can dry out a whole region. In some places, it creates "blue ice" areas where the snow is gone. In California, these winds can make wildfires grow very quickly. For example, they helped the 2018 Camp Fire and the 2020 North Complex grow. Just like a heavy blanket sliding off a bed, the air slides down the mountainside.

It occurs when an elevated mass of high-density air flows into a lower-density air mass below. Air density is a measure of how much mass is packed into a specific volume. Because temperature strongly affects density, these winds are usually relatively cool or cold. This happens because colder air is more dense than warmer air. Gravity then pulls that heavy, cold air down the slope toward lower elevations.

Scientists categorize these winds into two main types based on their mechanism. The most common type is driven by radiative cooling.

After the sun sets, the ground loses heat through a process called radiative cooling. This cools the air sitting directly against the slope surface. This layer of air becomes dense and begins to flow down into the valley. This nocturnal movement is easily observed in many mountainous regions at night.

The second type is known as a fall wind. Fall winds do not rely on the ground cooling itself down. Instead, they are caused by the advection of a cold air mass onto the top of a slope. Advection is the horizontal movement of an air mass from one place to another. This might happen when a cold front arrives or when cool marine air moves in via a sea breeze. The Bora wind in the Adriatic is an example of this process.

Katabatic winds have many different names depending on where they occur. In Greenland, they are called piteraq winds. These winds are most intense when a low pressure area approaches the coast. In the Ore Mountains, they are called the Bohemian Wind, or Böhmwind. Other regional names include the Santa Ana winds in southern California and the oroshi in Japan. New Zealand calls its version "the Barber."

In certain environments, these winds reach incredible speeds and power. In Antarctica and Greenland, winds blow off massive, elevated ice sheets. The combination of high-density air and great elevation creates enormous gravitational energy. When these winds are forced into narrow coastal valleys, they can exceed hurricane force.

In Alaska and the Fuegian Archipelago of South America, these winds are called williwaws. These can reach speeds faster than 60 miles per hour and pose a danger to vessels.

These winds can also drastically change the local environment. Because the air is descending, it tends to have low relative humidity. This dryness can desiccate a region, meaning it strips away moisture. In parts of Antarctica, the wind scours the snow away entirely. This creates the McMurdo Dry Valleys, which are also called "Antarctic oases." In other areas, the wind creates "blue ice" zones. In these zones, the wind removes snow and causes surface ice to undergo sublimation.

Katabatic winds are distinct from other types of downslope winds. For example, the föhn and chinook are rain shadow winds. These winds work differently because they are driven up a mountain first. As the air moves upslope on the windward side, it drops its moisture. When the air finally descends the leeward side, it is much drier and warmer. Understanding the difference between katabatic winds and rain shadow winds helps meteorologists predict local weather patterns more accurately.
