Scutum is a small group of stars in the sky. 

Scutum has some very big stars. One star is named UY Scuti. It is a red supergiant, which is a very large star. It is over 900 times wider than our Sun. Another star is called RSGC1-F01. This star is even bigger. It is over 1,450 times wider than the Sun.
There are also many star clusters in Scutum. A cluster is a large group of stars. One famous group is the Wild Duck Cluster.

Scutum is a small but significant constellation in the night sky. Its name comes from the Latin word for shield. 

The history of Scutum is tied to a famous military victory. In 1684, the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius named it Scutum Sobiescianum. This translates to the "Shield of Sobieski." He created this name to honor King John III Sobieski of Poland. The king led Christian forces to a victory at the Battle of Vienna in 1683. Over time, the long name was shortened to just Scutum. 
Scutum contains several types of massive stars. The brightest star is Alpha Scuti, which is a K-type giant star. 
Some of the most massive stars in the universe reside in Scutum. UY Scuti is a red supergiant star. A supergiant is an extremely large and bright star. UY Scuti has a radius over 900 times larger than the Sun. Another star, RSGC1-F01, is even more massive. Its radius is over 1,450 times that of the Sun. Scutum also hosts several clusters of these supergiant stars. These include the clusters named RSGC1, Stephenson 2, and RSGC3. 
Beyond individual stars, Scutum holds many deep-sky objects. These include open clusters, a globular cluster, and a planetary nebula. 
Other interesting objects can be found in the eastern part of the constellation. The globular cluster NGC 6712 and the planetary nebula IC 1295 are located there. These two objects are only 24 arcminutes apart. A planetary nebula is a cloud of gas ejected by a star. 
Scutum also connects to the story of human space exploration. The space probe Pioneer 11 is currently moving in the direction of this constellation. The probe travels at a speed of about 2.4 astronomical units per year. Even at this high speed, the journey is incredibly long. It will not get near the closest star in Scutum for over a million years. By the time it arrives, the probe's batteries will have been dead for a very long time. This highlights the immense scale of the universe and the distances between stars.
