They lived near the Chari River basin. This area is now part of Cameroon and Chad. The Sao were the first civilization to leave clear traces in Cameroon. They lived for many centuries. Some say they started in the 6th or 5th century BCE. Others say they lasted until the 16th century AD.

The Sao were very skilled at making things. They worked with bronze, copper, and iron. They made tools like spears for their work. They also made beautiful art for their homes. This art included jewelry and decorated pottery. They made statues out of clay, which is called terracotta.

Scientists think the Sao came from older groups. One group was the Gajiganna culture. The Gajiganna lived near Lake Chad. They lived from about 1800 BCE to 900 BCE. They built fortified towns around 800 BCE. The Sao grew from these earlier cultures. They became a more complex society over time. This happened between the 11th and 4th centuries BCE.

The Sao lived in many city-states. These cities were at their strongest between the 9th and 15th centuries CE. Most people think the Sao culture ended in the 16th century. This happened after the Bornu Empire expanded. During this time, many people also changed to Islam. This changed the cultural identity of the former Sao. The Kotoko people now live in the old Sao city-states.

Many people today say they come from the Sao. These groups include the Sara and the Kotoko. Other groups like the Buduma and Musgum also claim this link. Oral histories tell us more about their lives. They say the Sao were made of many clans. These clans shared one language and one religion. Some stories even call the Sao mighty warriors or giants.
