It sits southeast from the Greek mainland. This island is the largest part of a circular group of islands. This group is called an archipelago. The islands sit around a large, water-filled hole called a caldera.

The island is part of the Cyclades group. It also belongs to the Thira regional unit. The municipality includes the island of Therasia and several other smaller islands. Some of these islands, like Nea Kameni, have no people living on them.

This island is a very active volcanic center. It is part of a long volcanic arc in the South Aegean. Volcanic activity first began in this area about 3 to 4 million years ago. On the island of Thera, volcanoes began to form about 2 million years ago. These volcanoes released lava from vents near a place called Akrotiri. About 3,600 years ago, one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history happened here.

Long ago, a great town called Akrotiri was a major port. This town was part of the Minoan civilization. It was a busy place for trade with many other lands. People brought goods from places like Egypt and Cyprus.

Archaeologists began digging at this site in 1967. They found many multi-level buildings and streets. Some walls were as high as eight metres.

The people of Akrotiri were very advanced for their time. They had a complex community with organized textile weaving. They even had a highly developed drainage system. They used pipes to move both hot and cold water.

The town had large stone staircases and huge ceramic jars. Some houses were as tall as three storeys. These ruins are often compared to the famous ruins at Pompeii in Italy.

The site had to be closed for many years to build a new canopy. This was done after the old roof collapsed in 2005.

This involved the extrusion of dacitic lavas from vents near Akrotiri. Dacitic lava is a specific type of volcanic rock.

A massive event occurred about 3,600 years ago. This was the Minoan eruption, or the Thera eruption. It happened during the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption lasted for several weeks. It produced massive tsunami waves and left deep layers of volcanic ash.

Some people suggest this eruption inspired the legend of Atlantis. This lost civilization is a famous myth from antiquity. The eruption also serves as a fixed point for dating history. Archaeologists use it to organize the chronology of the second millennium BC.

Archaeologists have found incredible things at the Akrotiri site. Excavations began in 1967 under Spyridon Marinatos. The site is the best-known Minoan location outside of Crete. The volcanic ash entombed a large town, preserving its structures. Researchers found multi-level buildings and streets. Some walls stand as high as eight metres.

History on the island continued through many different eras. The Dorians founded a city on Mesa Vouno in the ninth century BC. This site is known today as Ancient Thera.

Later, the island was a naval base for Ptolemaic Egypt. During the Byzantine period, a volcano erupted again in 727. This explosion was described as a vapour like fire. It was seen as a divine omen. The island has since seen many rulers, including Romans and Ottomans.
