Santiago de Cuba has been the site of major political shifts. During the Spanish-American War, Spanish troops suffered a major defeat at San Juan Hill on 1 July 1898. 

The city is a center for culture, music, and religion. It is the birthplace of the world-famous Bacardi brand, started by Facundo Bacardi Masso in 1862. 



Santiago de Cuba contains many significant historical and protected sites. The Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
