This mountain is part of the Sierra Madre range. Long ago, local Kʼicheʼ people called it Gagxanul. That name means "Naked Volcano" or "Naked Mountain." The volcano formed because of a process called subduction. This happens when the Cocos Plate moves under the Caribbean Plate. This movement created the Central America Volcanic Arc.

The volcano grew in four different stages over a long time. These stages happened between 103,000 and 25,000 years ago.

These eruptions built up the large cone we see today. After the cone was built, the volcano had long periods of rest. During these quiet times, it only released small lava flows. These flows came from vents on the mountain. This pattern of building and resting shaped the landscape.

The 1902 eruption was extremely violent and destructive. The explosion occurred at a vent on the southwest side of the volcano. It left behind a massive crater that is very deep. This crater stretches from just below the summit down to a specific elevation. During the eruption, pumice fell over a huge area. Volcanic ash traveled as far as San Francisco, California.

In the area surrounding the volcano, the sky turned pitch black for 53 hours. The eruption caused the deaths of an estimated 6,000 people through burning or suffocation. It also destroyed many coffee plantations and changed the lives of native communities forever.

Following 20 years of dormancy, new activity began in 1922. This activity created a lava dome complex named Santiaguito inside the old crater.

The goal is to understand the volcano better to prevent future natural disasters.
