She was a great leader on the ice. She acted as a skip, which is the team captain. Sandra led her team to three world titles. She also won three Canadian championships. In 1998, she won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics. This was the first year women's curling was an Olympic sport.

People loved her skill and her name. A TV host called her "Schmirler the Curler." This was because her name rhymes with the sport. She also worked as a sports commentator on TV.

Sandra grew up in Saskatchewan, Canada. She started curling in school. She was also a fast swimmer and played volleyball. Her Olympic team included Jan Betker, Joan McCusker, and Marcia Gudereit. Many people call them the greatest Canadian women's team ever.

Sadly, Sandra became very ill with cancer. She passed away in 2000 at age 36. Many groups still honor her work. She was put into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. She was also in the World Curling Federation Hall of Fame.
