The city sits within the Salvadoran highlands. This location is part of the Boquerón Volcano Valley. Because of this, the area has high seismic activity. This means the city is prone to earthquakes. In 1525, the conquistador Gonzalo de Alvarado founded a mission here. He named it San Salvador. This name likely refers to the feast of the Transfiguration of Jesus. The town actually moved locations twice during its early history. In 1528 and 1545, it was relocated to the Valle de Las Hamacas. This area was chosen because the Acelhuate River provided fertile land.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the city changed many times. In 1824, El Salvador became an independent state. San Salvador became the political epicenter of this new nation. The city has faced many challenges from natural disasters. In 1873, a massive earthquake forced the reconstruction of the city. In 1917, an eruption of the San Salvador volcano caused damage. However, the lava flowed down the back side of the volcano. This saved the city from even more destruction. In 1986, another large earthquake destroyed many government buildings.

San Salvador is also a center for international events. It has hosted the Central American and Caribbean Games three times. These games took place in 1935, 2002, and 2023. It also hosted the Central American Games in 1977 and 1994. The city even hosted the Miss Universe pageant in 1975 and 2023. These events show how important the city is to the region. The city is a place where people from many different backgrounds meet. It is home to Roman Catholic and many Protestant Christian groups.
