San Miguel de Tucumán is a vital urban center in northern Argentina. It serves as the capital and largest city of the Tucumán Province.

Within the national context, it ranks as the fifth-largest city in Argentina. It follows Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Rosario, and Mendoza in size. The city acts as the most important hub for the northern region of the country. It sits on the slopes of the Aconquija mountains. This range represents the easternmost mountains before the vast Chaco-Pampean flats begin. The city is bordered by several different areas. To the north lies Las Talitas. To the east are Banda del Río Salí and Alderetes. To the west is the city of Yerba Buena. To the south lies Lules.

As a commercial center, the city supports a massive agricultural industry. It manages an irrigated area that produces huge quantities of crops. These include sugarcane, rice, tobacco, and various fruits. This high level of production earned the province the nickname "the Garden of the Republic." The city also serves as an educational center for the region. It is home to the National University of Tucumán, founded in 1914. It also hosts the Saint Thomas Aquinas University of the North, which opened in 1965. These institutions help drive the local economy and culture.

The climate of San Miguel de Tucumán is a transition zone. It sits between the temperate climates of the south and the subtropical climates of the north. Scientists use the Köppen climate classification to describe it as a humid subtropical climate, or Cwa. This means the precipitation pattern is monsoonal. Most of the annual rainfall occurs during the hot summer months. The winter months are much drier. July is the coldest month, with a mean temperature of 13.5 degrees Celsius. Frosts are quite rare in this region. When they do occur, they are usually light. Snow is an extremely rare event. It reached the city center in 2007. Sleet was also reported in the downtown area in 2010.

The history of the city began with the Spanish conquistador Diego de Villarroel. He founded the settlement on May 31, 1565. The original site was called Campos de Ibatín, located southwest of the current city. However, the water quality at Ibatín was poor. Because of this, the city moved to its present location in 1685.

A major turning point occurred on September 24, 1812. The Battle of Tucumán took place near the city. Manuel Belgrano led an army to defeat the Spanish forces coming from Upper Peru. Belgrano was forced to retreat to Córdoba by the government in Buenos Aires. However, the local people of Tucumán asked him to stay and resist. He was reinforced by local gauchos known as "Los decididos de Tucumán." This victory helped ensure the independence of Argentina.

Following the battle, the city became a central site for political change. In 1816, a congress gathered in the city to declare independence from Spain.

This declaration included independence from any other foreign domination. The act was signed at the House of Tucumán. This building is now a national monument. The house has a complex history of preservation. It suffered significant deterioration over the years. The government acquired it in 1874 to use as a post office. In 1903, the building was almost completely demolished because it was in such poor condition. Only the room where the independence was declared was saved. In 1942, the house was completely rebuilt. Architects used the original plans and similar materials like specific bricks and roof tiles.

The architecture of the city reflects its changing population. In the late 1800s, many immigrants arrived from Spain, Italy, and other places. These groups included Arabic and Jewish immigrants. Their influence moved the city away from a purely colonial style. New buildings began to use Neoclassical, eclectic, and picturesque styles.
