Samuel Insull was a big name in the world of business. He helped build the systems that bring electricity to many homes.

Insull started as a secretary for Thomas Edison. He later moved to Chicago to lead an electric company. He found a smart way to lower power bills. He used a system called metered billing. This meant people paid for the power they actually used. Many families saw their bills drop by 32 percent.

Insull also helped start radio stations. He wanted people to hear opera music at home. He even helped build the Chicago Civic Opera House.

His business empire was very large. He owned many electric companies and railroads. But his empire fell apart during the Great Depression. This was a very hard time for the economy. Many people lost their life savings when his companies failed. Insull was accused of doing things that were not fair to investors. He went to trial for these charges. However, a jury found him not guilty of all charges.
