Samuel Gompers was a very important leader for workers in America.

As a young man, Gompers learned a lot about working together. He joined a union for cigar makers when he was 14. He later married a co-worker named Sophia Julian. In 1873, he moved to a new shop called David Hirsch & Company. This was a very important change for him. At this shop, he met skilled workers who had big ideas. One man named Karl Laurrell helped teach him. Laurrell told him to focus on trade unions. This meant using economic power to help workers. Gompers learned to believe in organized groups rather than just politics.

Samuel Gompers was a central figure in the history of American labor. He was a cigar maker by trade and a powerful union leader.
Born Samuel Gumpertz in 1850, he grew up in Spitalfields, London. His family was Jewish and originally came from Amsterdam. They faced significant financial struggles during his childhood. At age ten, he began working as an apprentice cigar maker to support his family.
His career changed significantly when he moved to David Hirsch & Company in 1873. This was a high-class shop that employed highly skilled workmen.
As a leader, Gompers focused on a method called collective bargaining. This is when workers act together to negotiate with employers. He wanted to secure higher wages and shorter working hours for all members. He believed these were essential steps toward the emancipation of labor.
The AFL grew into a massive coalition of different craft unions. Gompers worked to promote harmony among these groups. He tried to minimize jurisdictional battles, which are disputes over which union has authority over certain jobs. Under his leadership, the AFL became much stronger than older groups like the Knights of Labor. By 1900, the Knights of Labor had almost vanished. The AFL also expanded its influence into Canada. By 1902, the AFL dominated the Canadian union movement.
Gompers held complex and often controversial views on immigration. He opposed unrestricted immigration from Europe because he feared it would lower wages. He also strongly opposed immigration from Asia. He supported the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.
During World War I, Gompers played a major role in national affairs. He supported the war effort and worked to prevent strikes.
Even in his final years, Gompers remained active in labor issues. He supported amnesty for political prisoners convicted under wartime laws. He worked closely with Lucy Robins Lang on this effort. He remained the first vice president of the Cigar Makers' International Union until he died in December 1924.
