Samora Moisés Machel was a famous leader from Mozambique.

As a young man, Machel studied to be a nurse. He began his training in the city of Lourenço Marques. This city is known today as Maputo. While working at a hospital, he saw more unfairness. He noticed that Black nurses were paid less than White nurses. This made him want to join the fight for freedom. He eventually left the country to join a group called FRELIMO.
Machel became a very important part of the FRELIMO movement. He traveled through Swaziland, South Africa, and Botswana to reach Tanzania. In Tanzania, he joined the group's military training. He was one of the first fighters sent to train in Algeria. Later, he became a top commander in the FPLM army. He rose through the ranks very quickly. By 1970, he was elected as the President of FRELIMO.
The fight for independence lasted for many years. FRELIMO fought against the Portuguese army in many places. They operated in provinces like Niassa, Tete, and Cabo Delgado. In 1974, a big change happened in Portugal. Officers there overthrew their own government. This helped lead to a deal for Mozambique. On June 25, 1975, Mozambique finally became an independent country.
As President, Machel wanted to build a socialist state. He believed in a system that helped workers and peasants. His government made many big changes very quickly. They took control of all the land in the country. In July 1975, the state also took control of schools and hospitals. He wanted to stop people from being exploited by others. Sadly, Machel died in a plane crash in 1986.
Samora Moisés Machel was a revolutionary leader and the first President of Mozambique.

Machel was born on September 29, 1933, in the village of Madragoa. His family were farmers living in the Gaza Province. At that time, Portugal ruled Mozambique as a colonial power. Life for Black Mozambicans was shaped by strict Portuguese laws. For instance, Machel's father was classified as an "indígena," or native. This status meant farmers faced many unfair rules. They had to accept lower prices for their crops than White farmers. They were also forced to grow cotton instead of food crops. Despite these hardships, Machel's father was a successful farmer with 400 cattle.
As a young man, Machel pursued a career in medicine. He began studying nursing in the capital city, Lourenço Marques. Today, this city is known as Maputo.
To fight for independence, Machel joined a group called FRELIMO. He had to flee the country to avoid the Portuguese political police, known as the PIDE. He traveled through Swaziland, South Africa, and Botswana to reach Tanzania. In Botswana, he even hitched a ride on a plane with the African National Congress. In Tanzania, he volunteered for military service. He was part of a group of guerrillas sent to Algeria for training. Machel rose through the ranks of the FPLM, the FRELIMO army. By 1970, he was elected President of FRELIMO.
The struggle for independence involved intense military conflict. The Portuguese launched a large offensive called Operation Gordian Knot in 1970. They targeted the northern province of Cabo Delgado. Machel responded by moving the fight to the western province of Tete. This area was important because of the Cahora Bassa dam project. FRELIMO units eventually moved into Manica and Sofala provinces. They even began to strike the railway lines near Beira. The war changed significantly in April 1974 when a coup happened in Portugal. This event gave FRELIMO the chance to negotiate for full independence.
Negotiations led to an agreement signed in Lusaka on September 7, 1974. This deal set the date for independence as June 25, 1975.
Once in power, Machel's government implemented rapid changes. The state took control of all land through a process called nationalization. This meant people could lease land from the state rather than owning it. On July 24, 1975, the government also nationalized all health and education institutions. This allowed the state to set up national services for all citizens. Machel wanted to build a society led by a worker-peasant alliance. These actions were meant to reshape the entire structure of Mozambican life.
Machel's influence reached far beyond the borders of Mozambique. He was recognized by many international socialist movements.
