Samia Suluhu Hassan is a prominent Tanzanian politician. She serves as the sixth president of Tanzania. She assumed office on March 19, 2021. Hassan is the first woman to hold this presidency. She previously served as the vice-president from 2015 to 2021. Her rise to power followed the death of President John Magufuli.

Her journey into leadership began with extensive education and diverse work. She was born in the Sultanate of Zanzibar on January 27, 1960. After completing secondary school in 1977, she worked as an office clerk. She later earned an advanced diploma in public administration in 1986. Between 1992 and 1994, she studied at the University of Manchester. There, she earned a postgraduate diploma in economics. In 2015, she completed an MSc in Community Economic Development. These academic steps prepared her for high-level governance.

Before becoming vice-president, Hassan held several significant regional and national roles. In 2000, she became a minister in the Zanzibar government. As the Minister for Youth Employment, Women and Children, she ended a ban on new mothers returning to school. In 2010, she won a seat in the National Assembly for the Makunduchi constituency. She also served as the Minister of State for Union Affairs. In 2014, she was elected vice-chairperson of the Constituent Assembly. This body was responsible for drafting the new Tanzanian constitution.

Hassan entered the presidency through a specific constitutional process. In 2015, she was the vice-presidential candidate for the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party. She was an unexpected choice, as many more prominent politicians were passed over. She and John Magufuli won the election and were sworn in on November 5, 2015. They were re-elected to a second term in 2020. When Magufuli died in March 2021, Hassan ascended to the presidency. She was the only female head of government in Africa at that time.

As president, Hassan implemented several major policy shifts. She moved away from the isolationism of her predecessor. She focused on the globalization of the Tanzanian economy through tourism and investment. To promote this, she filmed a movie called "The Royal Tour" in early 2021. She also prioritized infrastructure projects like railways and hydropower plants. Regarding health, she reversed the previous administration's stance on the COVID-19 pandemic. In July 2021, she entered Tanzania into the COVAX program to distribute vaccines.

Her leadership style has been described by various journalists as "soft-spoken." She often uses a collaborative approach by consulting with her advisors. Early in her term, she was seen as a reformer. She released political prisoners and reopened newspapers that had been shut down. She also lifted the ban on political rallies in 2023. These actions were intended to improve Tanzania's global image.

However, her presidency has also faced serious challenges and criticism. The 2025 general election was marked by significant unrest. The CCM government banned the main opposition party, Chadema, from participating. The leader of Chadema, Tundu Lissu, was arrested and charged with treason. The election involved irregularities and an internet shutdown. Human rights organizations reported that security forces used live ammunition during protests. The opposition claimed up to 1,000 people were killed. While the government denied these high numbers, the events led scholars to view her rule as increasingly authoritarian.
