Salviniales

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some ferns live in the water. This group is called Salviniales. They are very different from other ferns. Most ferns do not live in water.

These ferns make two types of spores. Spores are tiny bits used to make new plants. One type is large and the other is small. The small ones make male parts. The large ones make female parts. These spores are endosporic. This means the tiny plants stay inside the spore wall. They never grow larger than the spore itself.

These plants have many parts. Some have leaves that look different from each other. They also have aerenchyma. This is a type of tissue with air spaces. It helps them in the water.

There are two main families in this group. The Salviniaceae family floats on top of the water. The Marsileaceae family stays rooted in the mud. One plant called Azolla grows very fast. It is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth. Long ago, it helped cool the climate of our world.
