Salta is a large city in Argentina. It is the capital of its province. The city sits in the Lerma Valley. Over 627,004 people live there. It is the seventh largest city in the country.

The weather is pleasant all year. Salta is high up in the mountains. It sits at 1,200 metres above sea level. Summers are warm with many thunderstorms. These rains make the green hills look lush. Winters are very dry. You might see frost on cold nights.

History is part of the city. A man named Hernando de Lerma founded it in 1582. Later, a leader named General Martín Miguel de Güemes defended the area. Many people moved there from other lands. This made the city have many different cultures.

There are many things to see. You can visit the Ninth of July Square. It has old buildings and a large museum. This museum holds items from the Inca people. You can also climb San Bernardo Hill. You can use a car or a cable car to reach the top. From there, you can see the whole valley.
