This water floods the marsh on a regular schedule.

Salt marshes form in a special way. It starts on flat areas of mud or sand. Rivers carry tiny bits of dirt called sediment to the coast. When the tide comes in, the water slows down. This helps the sediment sink to the bottom.

Soon, plants like glasswort start to grow in the mud. These plants help trap even more sediment. Their roots act like a net to hold the mud in place. Over time, the land grows higher.

These marshes are busy homes for many living things. Many fish use the tall grass as a nursery. They stay there while they are young. Birds also visit to find food like insects and worms.

Salt marshes also help the Earth. They can trap carbon, which is a gas in the air. This helps keep our planet healthy.
