Before becoming a full-time novelist, Rushdie worked in advertising. He served as a copywriter for agencies like Ogilvy & Mather and Ayer Barker. He created famous slogans like "Naughty but Nice" for cream cakes. He also wrote the line "That'll do nicely" for American Express. Rushdie's career reached a major milestone with Midnight's Children in 1981. The novel follows Saleem Sinai, a boy born at the exact moment of India's independence. This book won the Booker Prize in 1981. It was later named the "best novel of all winners" during the prize's 25th and 40th anniversaries. His other works, such as Shame, explored political tensions in Pakistan. He also wrote The Jaguar Smile, a non-fiction book about Nicaragua.

Some of Rushdie's work has faced intense controversy and danger. His 1988 novel, The Satanic Verses, was seen by some as irreverent toward Muhammad. This led to the book being banned in 20 countries. The supreme leader of Iran, Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa, which is a religious decree, calling for his death. This event sparked global debates regarding censorship and religious violence. In 2022, Rushdie survived a stabbing at the Chautauqua Institution. This attack resulted in the loss of his right eye and damage to his liver and hands.
