Salerno is the second largest city in Campania, following Naples. As of 2025, the city has 125,958 inhabitants. The urban area is divided into three distinct zones. These include the medieval center, a 19th-century area, and modern residential zones filled with apartment blocks.

The history of human settlement in this area begins in pre-historic times. Archaeological finds, such as Neolithic mummy remains, prove people lived here long ago. In the 6th century BC, the Etruscans founded a settlement named Irnthi. They built it across the Irno river in the area now known as Fratte. This settlement served as a base for trade with nearby Greek colonies. Around the 5th century BC, the Samnites occupied the region. Later, the Romans established a new colony called Salernum in 197 BC.

This Roman city developed around an initial castrum, which is a military camp. It eventually became a major trade center connected to Rome by the Via Popilia.

During the early Middle Ages, Salerno entered a period of great power. In 774, Arechis II moved the seat of the Duchy of Benevento to Salerno. He wanted to control strategic communication routes in Campania. By 839, Salerno became an independent principality. This state stretched from Capua to parts of Calabria and Apulia.

The Normans changed the direction of the city's history in the 11th century. In 1076, the conqueror Robert Guiscard besieged the city. By 1077, the Normans had taken control and made Salerno their capital. For about fifty years, it was the most important Norman city in the region. However, the city eventually lost its status to Palermo. In 1194, the city was sacked and pillaged during the Hohenstaufen conquest. This event significantly reduced the prosperity of the city for a time. Later, the powerful Sanseverino family ruled the region as feudal lords. They turned the city into a center for the arts and intellectual life.

In the 19th century, Salerno became a hub for industrial growth. The city supported the Risorgimento, which was the movement for Italian unification. In 1861, the city welcomed Giuseppe Garibaldi during his struggle. During this era, foreign industries began to settle in the area. The first textile mill was established in 1830 by a Swiss entrepreneur. By 1877, the city hosted 21 different textile mills. These factories employed approximately 10,000 workers. Because of this massive industry, people called Salerno the "Manchester of the two Sicilies." This industrial boom helped the population grow from 20,000 in 1861 to 80,000 by the early 20th century.

World War II brought intense conflict to the shores of Salerno. In September 1943, the Allies launched Operation Avalanche. This was a major invasion of Italy that took place near the city.

The fighting caused significant damage to the urban landscape. However, the city also played a vital political role during the war. After Italy negotiated peace with the Allies, Salerno became the seat of the provisional government. From February to July 1944, it served as the de facto capital of the Kingdom of Italy. King Victor Emmanuel III lived in a mansion on the outskirts of the city during these months.

Today, Salerno is a major Mediterranean city with a complex identity. It connects the eastern plains to the coastal roads leading toward Naples. The city's architecture reflects its many layers of history. You can see the medieval roots in the centro storico. You can also see the 19th-century influences and modern residential developments. The city remains a significant center for the Campania region. It continues to be a place where ancient history meets modern Italian life.
