The island has many volcanic peaks. The highest is Mount Liamuiga. It is a dormant volcano, which means it is not active now. The land is very steep in the middle. Because of this, most people live near the coast. A ring road goes around the edge of the island. The capital city is Basseterre. It is also the largest port.

History has changed the island many times. Long ago, the Kalinago people lived there. Later, people from England and France arrived. They fought for control of the land. For a long time, the island grew sugar cane. This work was done by enslaved people from Africa. Slavery was ended by law in 1834. Today, many people visit for tourism. You can ride the Saint Kitts Scenic Railway. It was once used to move sugar cane. Now, it takes tourists on a tour of the island.
