Scientists have studied these palms for a long time. A man named Michel Adanson first used the name Sabal in the 18th century. In 1990, a scientist named Scott Zona studied how the species are related. He used physical traits to group them into four clades. A clade is a group of living things that are closely related. Later, in 2016, a team led by Heyduk used molecular data to study them. This new study showed that some species belong in different groups than Zona thought.

Sabal palms have a very long history on Earth. Fossil evidence shows they lived from the late Cretaceous period until the Quaternary period. This means they existed from 66 million years ago until 12 thousand years ago.

Scientists have found fossils in the United States and Europe. They even found them in Japan. In Greece, leaf fossils were found in rocks that are 27 million years old. In Slovakia, fossils of the Sabal lamanonis were found in rocks called rhyodacite tuff.

These palms play an important role in nature and for people. Many animals eat the fruit, including birds, raccoons, and American black bears. Some species, like Sabal palmetto, even have their own special lichen. People use these palms in many ways too. Some are planted in cities to look beautiful. This petiole is unarmed, meaning it does not have thorns. Each leaf features a costa, or midrib, that extends directly into the leaf blade. The length of this costa varies between different species. This variation changes the shape of the leaf blade. Some species, such as *Sabal palmetto* and *Sabal etonia*, have strongly curved or costapalmate leaves. Other species, like *Sabal minor*, have leaves that are weakly costapalmate and almost flattened.

The fruit of the *Sabal* palm is a drupe. A drupe is a type of fruit with a fleshy part surrounding a hard shell. These fruits typically change color from green to black as they reach maturity. Before this, the group was associated with names like *Corypha* or *Chamaerops*. In 1990, Scott Zona conducted an analysis of the genus. He looked at morphological and anatomical characters, which are the physical shapes and structures of the plants. Zona created a cladogram, a diagram showing evolutionary relationships. He identified four distinct clades, or groups of closely related species. Clade 1 contained *Sabal minor*. Clade 2 included *Sabal bermudana*, *S. palmetto*, *S. miamiensis*, and *S. etonia*. Clade 3 was the largest, containing seven species like *Sabal causiarum* and *S. mexicana*. Clade 4 included *Sabal uresana*, *S. rosei*, and *S. pumos*.

More recent research has changed how we understand these evolutionary relationships. In 2016, a study led by Heyduk, Trapnell, Barrett, and Leebens-Mack used molecular data. This means they looked at nuclear and plastid DNA sequences to estimate how species are related. Their results differed from Zona's earlier cladogram. The molecular data showed that Clade 4 species actually split and integrated throughout the wider phylogeny, or the evolutionary tree. Clade 3 was also significantly disrupted and split into multiple groups. However, the relationships in Clade 1 and Clade 2 remained consistent with Zona's work.

The history of *Sabal* reaches far back into the prehistoric past. Fossils show these plants lived from the late Cretaceous to the Quaternary period. This spans from 66 million years ago to just 12,000 years ago.

Fossil evidence has been found in the United States, Japan, and several European countries. These include Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Greece, Slovakia, the United Kingdom, and France. Humans interact with *Sabal* palms in many practical ways. Because arborescent, or tree-like, species grow slowly, they are often transplanted into urban landscapes rather than grown in nurseries. Some species are used as ornamental plants in gardens. Because some are cold-hardy, they can grow further north than most other palms. The central bud of *Sabal palmetto* is edible and is called "swamp cabbage" when cooked. Additionally, people use the mature fronds for thatch, weaving mats, or making straw hats.
