The system uses advanced signaling to manage traffic safely. One key technology is Communications-Based Train Control, or CBTC. This system helps trains communicate their exact positions. The Green Line was the first in Latin America to use CBTC. Another important technology is Automatic Train Operation, known as ATO. ATO provides automated signaling and control for the trains. This system manages the safety of train movement and the activation of doors. On some lines, the trains are even fully automated. This is called Unattended Train Operation, or UTO. Lines 4 and 15 are currently driverless systems using UTO.

The metro system is organized into six distinct, color-coded lines.

Line 1 is the Blue Line, which runs from Tucuruvi to Jabaquara. Line 2 is the Green Line, running from Vila Madalena to Vila Prudente. Line 3 is the Red Line, connecting Palmeiras-Barra Funda to Corinthians-Itaquera. Line 4 is the Yellow Line, which travels from Vila Sônia to Luz. Line 5 is the Lilac Line, moving between Capão Redondo and Chácara Klabin. Finally, Line 15 is the Silver Line. Unlike the others, Line 15 is a high-capacity monorail. A monorail is a train that runs on a single rail. This makes Line 15 the first high-capacity monorail in Latin America.

The Companhia do Metropolitano de São Paulo was founded on April 24, 1968. Construction on the first line, the North-South line, began eight months later. In 1972, the first test trips occurred between Jabaquara and Saúde stations. Commercial service officially started on September 14, 1974. This initial segment ran between Jabaquara and Vila Mariana. Since then, the system has expanded significantly through many new projects. For example, construction on the all-underground Line 4 began in 2004. This project cost US$1 billion and aimed to carry nearly one million people daily.

The metro currently operates 91 different stations. In 2019, the system saw massive ridership numbers. The average weekday ridership reached 5.3 million people. On September 14, 2019, the system hit a record high of 5.5 million riders in one day. Over the entire year of 2019, the metro provided 1.49 billion rides. To make travel easier, the system introduced the "Bilhete Único" in 2006. This is a smart card, or single ticket, that works across the whole network. As of January 2026, a single ticket costs R$5.40, which is about US$1.00.

The trains themselves, known as rolling stock, come in many different varieties.

There are 232 trains in use, divided into 11 different "stocks." A stock refers to a specific group or model of trains. The very first model was the A stock, which began operating in 1974. These were designed in the United States by the Budd Company. Today, the A stock has been refurbished into I and J stocks. Other models include the C, D, E, F, G, H, K, L, M, and P stocks. For example, the M stock is specifically built for the Line 15 monorail. These diverse models allow the system to meet the needs of different lines.

Finally, the metro is a central hub for all city transportation.

It connects deeply with other ways to travel, such as buses. The Metrô manages several large inter-city bus terminals. These include the Tietê Bus Terminal, which opened in May 1982. Other terminals like Bresser and Palmeiras-Barra Funda are also integrated. This integration allows passengers to switch from a bus to a train very easily.
