Rydberg constant

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Scientists use a special number to study atoms. This is the Rydberg constant. It is named after Johannes Rydberg. He was a physicist from Sweden.

Johannes Rydberg helped us understand light. Atoms send out light in a set pattern. This constant helps us find that pattern. It relates to the light coming from an atom.

A man named Niels Bohr helped explain it too. He made the Bohr model. This model says electrons move around a nucleus. It is like planets moving around the Sun. The constant tells us about the light's wavelength. A wavelength is the distance between parts of a light wave.

We can also use this number for energy. This is called the Rydberg unit of energy. It tells us how much power it takes to pull an electron away. This is called ionization. Scientists measure this number very carefully. They study different atoms like hydrogen and deuterium. These studies help us learn more about how the tiny world works.
