It was the center of the Principality of Ryazan. In 1237, the Mongols attacked and destroyed the old city. The capital then moved to a new town called Pereyaslavl-Ryazansky. Catherine the Great later renamed this place Ryazan in 1778. This new city is where people live today.

The city grew very fast during the Soviet era. It became a major center for industry and the military. A petroleum refinery there produced its first gasoline in 1960. Ryazan also became known as the "paratrooper capital." This is because it has a special school for airborne forces. Under leader Nadezhda Chumakova, the population grew from 72,000 to 520,000. She helped build many new roads and parks.

Today, the city is a mix of old and new. You can see modern places like the Victoria Plaza mall.
