Many people had to leave their homes. They moved to other lands. They lived as refugees.
A group called the RPF was formed. They wanted to return home. They fought to win.
Later, a very sad thing happened. Many people were killed. It was a hard time.
After the war, leaders worked to help. They helped the country grow again. 
For a long time, groups in Rwanda did not get along. The Hutu and Tutsi people had many disputes. 
In Uganda, these refugees formed a group called the RPF. They wanted to return to Rwanda. The RPF began a war in 1990. 
But the peace did not last. In April 1994, the President was killed. This led to a genocide. During this time, many Tutsi and moderate Hutu were killed. It was a very dark time for the nation.
The RPF fought again to take control. They captured the capital city, Kigali, in July 1994. The war ended when the RPF won. 
The Rwandan Civil War was a major conflict in the country of Rwanda. It lasted from October 1, 1990, until July 18, 1994. 

The conflict began when the RPF invaded the north-eastern part of Rwanda. 
History shows that the roots of this war went back much further. In 1959, a revolution took place in Rwanda.

The war ended in July 1994 when the RPF captured the capital city, Kigali.

Leaders tried to find peace through the Arusha Accords. These were signed in August 1993 to end the fighting. 
The RPF responded to the genocide by resuming the war. They captured territory and surrounded the capital, Kigali. 

After the war, the RPF began rebuilding the nation. They worked on the economy and the country's infrastructure. They also brought perpetrators of the genocide to trial. The government promoted reconciliation between the Hutu and Tutsi. In 1996, the government launched an offensive into Zaire.
