Rust is a reddish-brown coating on iron or steel.

It forms through a set of steps called oxidation. This happens when iron meets oxygen from the air. Water is the main thing that helps this happen.

Water can seep into tiny cracks in the metal. Salt makes the process happen even faster. This is why metal near the sea rusts quickly.

Rust is different from other metal coatings. It is brittle and flaky. When it flakes off, it lets fresh metal touch the air. This means the rust keeps growing deep inside. This can make strong metal very weak. Rust also takes up more space than the original metal. This expansion can push on things and cause damage.

People use many ways to stop rust. They can use paint or wax to block the air. Some people use zinc to protect the metal. This is called galvanization. There is also a special steel called Cor-Ten. It forms a stable rust layer. This layer stays on the surface to protect the metal underneath.
